IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given two charts illustrate the proportion of people having a driving license in Great Britain by their ages and gender such as males and females between year 1975\76 and 2006.

Overall the graphs show that the women are more likely to have a full driving license now as compared to previous time, while men percentage seem to be same in both year with a slight difference. On the other hand a marginally changed was seen in later adulthood where men are now capable of havoing a driving license.

The most notable feature in first graph is that the number of person who hold a driving license during age age 40-70 accounted for highest proportion in 2006 as compared to in 1975. Moreover during age 30-39 and 17-20 the proportion almost remained equal .

The second graph which shows the women holding license are significantly increased in 2006 . It seems like a normal curve where number of women increase from young age to adulthood and then slighlty decline to the later adulthood. On the other hand women in 1975 also follow the same pattern but there proportion is few.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern that women’s licence-holding rose substantially by 2006, and you compare the two years for both sexes. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: men’s figures did not generally stay the same. They rose markedly among those aged 40 and over, while the 21–29 group fell from about 78% to 70%; only the youngest group was nearly unchanged. The claim that men aged 40–70 had the highest proportion also overlooks that the peak was around 92% for men aged 50–59 in 2006. Your description of women’s age pattern is relevant, but “a normal curve” and “there proportion is few” do not clearly report the key comparisons. Select and state the main contrasts more precisely, supported by representative figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement, and separate paragraphs discussing men and women. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. Some progression is weakened by unclear or loosely connected statements, particularly “On the other hand a marginally changed was seen in later adulthood,” which does not make clear what changed or how it relates to the overview. The repeated use of “On the other hand” also creates a mechanical contrast where the relationship is not always clear. Improve cohesion by grouping the most important comparisons—for example, the broad rise among older women and men, then the relatively stable or declining younger male figures—and use precise references to the age groups.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary such as “proportion,” “highest proportion,” “adulthood,” and “decline,” showing an adequate range for describing a chart. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or vague, including “people having a driving license,” “men percentage,” “normal curve,” and “there proportion is few.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “slighlty” and “havoing” also reduce control. These do not prevent the general topic from being understood, but they make some comparisons difficult to interpret. Aim for standard chart language and precise descriptions of change, such as “the percentage of licence holders” and “increased steadily before falling among older age groups.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “where,” and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “the women are more likely” is an awkward comparison of groups across time, while “a marginally changed was seen” has an incorrect structure. In “the proportion almost remained equal,” the phrasing does not form a natural grammatical comparison, and “women holding license are significantly increased” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement and use forms such as “the proportion increased” or “the proportion remained almost unchanged.” Check articles and punctuation when revising.
