Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad comparison between men and women and note that licence holding generally rises with age before falling among the oldest groups. However, the overview is inaccurate: the highest figures are not shared by both sexes in the 30–39 group. In 2006, men peak at about 92% among those aged 50–59, while women peak at about 79% among 40–49-year-olds. The body also misreports the direction of change for men, saying the 17–20 figure rises to nearly 80% for ages 21–29; in fact, it rises only to around 70% in 2006, and the 1975/76 figure is about 78%. The two body paragraphs do not clearly distinguish years or sexes, so several comparisons are difficult to verify. Select the main contrasts accurately and support them with clear, correctly attributed figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, with “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “In contrast” signalling stages. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear because the paragraphs do not state which year or sex they are describing. For example, “the percentage of license was approximately 40” is followed by figures that appear to mix age groups and years, while “followed the same trend as men” does not specify which trend. The overview also repeats the general idea of age groups and gender rather than setting out the key comparisons. Group the data explicitly by sex or year, and use clear references such as “among men in 2006” to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “age group,” and “increased,” and the reader can generally recognise the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear. Phrases such as “keeping complete driving licences,” “the figure of license wet to its peak,” and “the final group proportion” are not natural ways to describe the data. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “higest,” “whle,” “driving lisense,” and “dricing,” which reduce clarity. Build a reliable set of chart expressions—such as “the proportion holding a full licence,” “rose to,” and “reached a peak”—and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Both the gender…” and the comparison beginning “In contrast.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms often make the relationships between figures difficult to understand. For example, “the percentage of license was approximately 40 which were increase” has faulty agreement and verb formation, while “The figure of license wet to its peak” does not form a clear grammatical clause. The opening also contains the construction “by he age,” and several sentences omit articles or use incomplete patterns. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter, complete sentences before combining them with clauses such as “while” or “whereas.”
