Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar charts illustrate the percentage of residents having full driving lincences in Geart Britain which is categorised by their gender and age.

Overall, it can be seen that the percentage of male showed an upward trend according to their age in 2006 except the age group 17-20.

To begin, the fraction of men showed an increase from below 40% over 80% between age gap 17-20 and 30-39,in 2006. Subsequenlty, it was relatively stable from age groups 40-49 and 60-69 before decreasing below 80% in the age limit over 70. On the other hand, the percentage of women grew from over 30% to near 80% between 17-20 and 30-39. Then, it declined gradullay, reaching below 40% in the age group 70 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and makes some relevant comparisons, but it reports the data only minimally and misses the central contrast between the two years. The overview focuses on men in 2006 and describes a rise with age, although the figures peak around ages 50–59 and then fall; it also overlooks the substantial increases among women across most age groups. The account of women’s trend is inaccurate: their 2006 figures rise to about 79% at ages 40–49, not 30–39, before declining. No meaningful comparison with 1975/76 is given, and several age-group descriptions are vague. The response is also 28 words below the required minimum. Include a clearer overview and accurate comparisons across both years and sexes, supported by key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning “To begin” that compares men and women. The contrast marker “On the other hand” helps signal a shift between the sexes, so the reader can follow the broad direction of the response. However, the progression is limited because the account moves through age groups without establishing a clear comparison between 1975/76 and 2006, and the overview does not prepare the reader for the details that follow. Some linking is awkward or imprecise, such as “Subsequenlty” and “Then,” while punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Organise the details into a clearer comparison of the two years, and use transitions to show changes and contrasts accurately.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “fraction,” “upward trend,” “relatively stable,” and “declined.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat one basic term throughout. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “lincences,” “Geart,” “Subsequenlty,” and “gradullay.” Some expressions are also unnatural or unclear, including “between age gap” and “in the age limit over 70.” Use standard chart language such as “age group,” “licence holders,” “rose,” and “fell,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish increases, peaks, and declines without relying on vague phrases such as “below 80%.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “except the age group 17-20” and a contrastive sentence beginning “On the other hand.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “the percentage of male showed,” the noun phrase and verb agreement are faulty; “between age groups 40-49 and 60-69” does not form a clear grammatical comparison, and the sentence about women’s decline has an unclear reference for “it.” Commas are also missing after introductory transitions and around some clauses. Practise accurate plural and singular forms, clear comparison structures, and punctuation in longer sentences. A wider range of reliably controlled sentences would make the trends easier to interpret.
