Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a limited attempt to describe the chart, mentioning licence holders by age and sex and giving a few approximate figures. However, the figures and trends are often unclear or inaccurate: for example, the statement that women’s percentages “decreased by their ages” does not reflect the overall pattern, and “about 80%” is not linked clearly to a particular age group or year. The chart’s main comparisons—especially the substantial rise among women across most age groups and the high 2006 figures for middle-aged men—are not reported clearly. The response also ends with the incomplete phrase “Over the age of”. It contains 122 words, below the 150-word minimum, which further limits coverage. Select key comparisons and report them accurately in a clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
There is a basic attempt to connect ideas, using “However,” “Overall,” and references to the two years, but the information does not develop in a clear sequence. The opening is followed by a difficult-to-follow discussion of 17–20-year-olds, then an unclear reference to 1975–76, and then a broad statement about women. The repeated phrases about people having full driving licences do not help distinguish the comparisons. Paragraphing is absent, and the final words, “Over the age of”, leave the response unfinished. Organise the report into a short introduction, an overview of the main trends, and one or two paragraphs comparing age groups and years. Use linking words only where they show a clear relationship between points.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “adults,” “age,” and “full driving licences,” so the subject is generally identifiable. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “percentage” and “had full driving licences” used repeatedly. Several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “genders” for the chart’s male/female categories and “born in 2006,” which confuses the year of the data with people’s birth year. Spelling errors such as “percantage” and “licene” also reduce precision. Build a small set of accurate chart-reporting expressions and use them to describe proportions, increases, and comparisons rather than repeating the same wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including “if we see…” and “which had…”, but most sentences are difficult to follow because of problems with sentence structure and grammatical relationships. For example, “the adults which have 17 to 20 age which born in 2006” contains unclear clause links and an incorrect verb form, while “There are most of adults” has an inaccurate construction. Subject–verb agreement and articles are also inconsistent, as in “The graph illustrate” and “the adults.” The final fragment, “Over the age of,” is incomplete. Practise writing clear, complete sentences with a subject and verb, and use simple comparative structures such as “The proportion of women rose…” before attempting longer clauses.
