Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make an effort to compare both years and sexes, including the broad rise in women’s licence holding by 2006. However, the overview is unclear and contains inaccurate comparisons: in 1975–76, the highest male figure was for ages 40–49 (about 81%), not 30–39, and the highest female figure was for ages 30–39 (about 49%), not the age groups stated. In 2006, men aged 50–59 were highest, but women aged 40–49—not “40–39”—were highest. Some details are also imprecise, such as describing all younger people as above 35%. Select the main contrasts accurately, then support them with a few precise figures and a clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two periods. This helps the reader follow the broad time-based organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and several comparisons are presented as a list rather than grouped into clear patterns. Connectors such as “While,” “Moreover,” and “Meanwhile” are sometimes used awkwardly or without a clear relationship between the ideas; for example, “While 60 to 69 aged men…” is not smoothly linked to the preceding sentence. The overview also repeats information without establishing the most important contrast. Grouping age bands consistently and using clear links to compare men and women would make the organisation more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “accounted for,” and “gradually,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate enough to make some phrases difficult to interpret. Examples include “todlers” for the 17–20 age group, “licences holders,” “representated,” and “the younger womens.” Phrases such as “holding licences are the highest” and “age group totals” are also unnatural for describing chart data. Use precise terms such as “licence holders,” “proportion,” and “accounted for,” and check spelling and collocations. Avoid describing people as “toddlers,” since this age category refers to young adults.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer comparisons, but control is inconsistent, particularly in complex sentences. For example, “Overall, In 1975-76…” has incorrect capitalisation and punctuation, while “the men and women aged between 30-39 have full driving licences highest” lacks a grammatical construction for the superlative. Agreement and sentence structure are also problematic in “the number increase gradually” and “All the men 30-69 aged holding licences over 60%.” Several sentences begin with “While” or “Whereas” but are left as fragments or joined awkwardly. Practise complete comparative sentences, accurate past-tense reporting, and consistent subject–verb agreement; these changes would make your meaning easier to follow.
