Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the topic and attempt an overview, but the main features are not accurately or clearly summarised. The claim that “young children” had few licences is not supported: the chart concerns people aged 17–20, and men in this group were at about 36–37%, while women rose from 20% to 33%. Your comparisons for ages 21–29 and 30–39 are vague, and the statement about older women is unfinished. You also omit the major pattern: licence holding generally increased between 1975/76 and 2006, especially among women and older age groups, while men aged 21–29 declined. The response is 116 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail you can report. Select key contrasts and support them with accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening, an overview, and a paragraph beginning “Firstly.” Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “An other point” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because age groups are discussed in a confusing order and comparisons are often incomplete. For example, “women had licence declined in 1975” does not make clear what is being compared, and the final sentence stops after “and.” Some transitions are used mechanically rather than to show a precise relationship. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main comparisons, group related age bands, and complete each comparison before moving on.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age,” “sex,” “increased,” and “declined,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the range is narrow and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. “Young children” is not an appropriate description of people aged 17–20, and repeated phrases such as “had licence” do not express the data naturally. “Women decreased from men” and “similar in 2006” are also imprecise. Spelling and form issues, including “great britain” and “An other,” further reduce control. Build a small set of accurate chart phrases, such as “the proportion holding a licence,” “rose from … to …,” and “was higher than,” and use them consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the opening sentence communicates the general subject. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The graph beneath illustrate” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “did not had” uses the wrong verb form. Phrases such as “who age 17-20” and “women had licence declined” are structurally incomplete or unclear. Punctuation is also unreliable: several sentences run together, and the final sentence is unfinished. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, for example, “The proportion of women aged 40–49 rose from 37% to 79%.” Check agreement and past-tense forms before finishing.
