Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and attempts an overview, but it does not adequately summarise the chart’s main features. The statement about people aged 70 and over in 2006 is unclear and inaccurate: men’s figure rose from about 35% in 1975/76 to 77% in 2006, while women’s rose from about 3% to 29%, not from “0 -100.” The comment on 17–20-year-olds also misstates the trend: both sexes increased, from 36% to 37% for men and 20% to 33% for women. The final sentence is unfinished, and there are no meaningful comparisons across the age groups. The response is 74 words, below the required 150, so it cannot provide sufficient coverage of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, and sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “On the other hand.” However, the ideas do not progress into a complete summary: the final paragraph stops at “it fluctuates, to,” leaving the reader without a finished point. The overview is difficult to follow, and the shift from the oldest group to the youngest is not supported by clear comparisons or a consistent organising principle. Some linking phrases are used mechanically or do not introduce a clear contrast. To improve, group the data logically—for example, compare changes by sex or discuss older and younger age groups—and ensure each paragraph develops a complete, connected point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “holding,” “full driving licence,” “age,” and “percentage,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited, and several spelling errors—“ovver,” “increseases,” and “lincenses”—make the writing less clear and less controlled. Phrases such as “the number of people” are repeated and are not always suitable when the chart reports percentages. “Probability” is also an imprecise description of the figures, which show the proportion of licence holders. Build a more accurate range for describing data, such as “the proportion of licence holders,” “rose,” “fell,” and “was higher than,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast with “but” and a clause beginning “while.” However, grammatical control is weak and several sentences are difficult to interpret. For example, “the number of men and women with full driving license in 2006 is of 70 and ovver in men,it decreases” has unclear structure, faulty agreement and tense, and missing punctuation. “To begin with, the number of people holding lincenses from the age of 17 -20 men it increases” also has an incomplete sentence pattern. Use a clear subject and verb in each sentence, keep past-tense comparisons consistent, and punctuate clauses and sentence boundaries carefully. Short, accurate sentences would help make the comparisons understandable.
