Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph illustrates the propostion of men and women of different ages holding car driving licence in Great Britain from 1975/76 to 2006. It clearly shows that starting from 1975/76 men holds more driving licence for every age group ranges from 17-20 to 60-69 compares to women. Interestingly the most number of license men and women holds are in their 30's and least amount were in their 70's and older. If we take a look at 2006 men have still more licence of each group compare to women but the diffrence is less as compare to 1975/76. Most number of licence men hold were age 50-59 whereas women were 40-49 and its kept decreasing as we move in upward range. Overall we can conclude that men holds more driving licence for every group from 1975/76 to 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad comparison that men had higher licence-holding rates than women, and you note that the gap narrowed by 2006. However, the response only partially summarises the chart: it gives no specific percentages and overlooks important age patterns, such as the sharp rise among older women and the relatively low figures for the youngest groups. Some claims are inaccurate: in 1975/76, men’s highest rate was for ages 40–49, not in their 30s; in 2006, women peaked at 40–49, but men peaked at 50–59. The statement that rates kept decreasing as age rises is also too broad. The response is 13 words below the required minimum. Include a clearer overview and several accurate figures to develop the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the chart, compares the sexes, then comments on 2006 and gives a concluding statement. Linking phrases such as “Interestingly,” “If we take a look at 2006,” and “Overall” help signal these moves. However, the ideas are compressed into one paragraph, so the reader does not see a clear separation between the overview and supporting details. The progression is also weakened by repeated claims that men held more licences and by unclear references such as “its kept decreasing” and “every group from 1975/76 to 2006.” Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of key comparisons, using references that make clear which sex, year, and age group you mean.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “age group,” “difference,” and “overall,” and the main topic remains understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “propostion” appears to be a misspelling of “proportion,” “most number of licence” is unnatural, and “holds car driving licence” does not express the data naturally. “Licence” is also repeated frequently, while “percentage,” “rate,” and “share” could help vary the description. Spelling errors such as “diffrence” and “compares” reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “the proportion holding a full licence” and use vocabulary that distinguishes increases, peaks, and gaps between groups.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, for example, “It clearly shows that…” and “If we take a look at 2006…,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and errors are frequent enough to make parts awkward to follow. Subject–verb agreement is a recurring issue: “men holds” should be “men held,” and “the most number … are” needs a different construction. Comparisons are also formed incorrectly in “compares to women” and “the difference is less as compare to 1975/76.” There are tense inconsistencies when describing the two years, and the final sentence repeats the agreement error. Use past tense for the chart data and practise accurate comparative structures, such as “higher than” and “the gap was narrower than in 1975/76.”
