Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The bar chart illustrates information about the percentage of individual holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex
At the beginning of 1975/76, the men age to 50-59 and 60-69 had both the highest proportion of full driving licences, at around 85% of people and the female age of 60-69 accounted for at 61%, while 50-59 ages made up 65%. In addition, 17-20 ages of men and women had both the lowest proportion of driving licence , at roughly 25% to 29%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and attempts to compare age and sex groups, but it covers only a small part of the information and gives no overview of the main changes between 1975/76 and 2006. Several figures are inaccurate: in 1975/76, men aged 50–59 held licences at about 76%, not 85%, and men aged 60–69 were at about 60%, not 85%. The claim that 17–20-year-olds had the lowest proportions is also incorrect for men, whose lowest figure was among those aged 70 and over. The response contains 74 words, below the required 150, and therefore leaves most key comparisons unreported. Include both years, the broad rise among women and older men, and the contrasting pattern for younger men.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart and then reports selected figures for 1975/76. The opening sentence helps establish the topic, and “In addition” signals a further comparison. However, there is no clear overall progression through the chart: the 2006 data are omitted, and the comparisons within the second sentence are difficult to follow. For example, “the men age to 50-59 and 60-69 had both the highest proportion” does not clearly distinguish the two age groups or explain how they compare with other groups. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and key details, and organise the figures by year or by sex so the reader can follow the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “accounted for,” and “roughly,” which allows the reader to understand the general topic. However, the range is narrow and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “individual holding full driving licences” and “the female age of 60-69.” The repeated use of “age” and “proportion” also limits variety. More precise terms such as “licence holders,” “women aged 60–69,” “share,” and “stood at” would make the comparisons clearer and more natural. Aim to use vocabulary that accurately describes the data rather than relying on awkward phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a compound sentence and uses a time reference, but grammatical control is uneven. In “the men age to 50-59 and 60-69 had both the highest proportion,” the age-group construction and agreement are faulty; “men aged 50–59 and 60–69 had the highest proportions” would be clearer. The phrase “the female age of 60-69 accounted for at 61%” has an incorrect sentence pattern, while “17-20 ages of men and women had both the lowest proportion” has problems with noun forms and agreement. There is also no full stop at the end. Practise accurate comparative sentence patterns and check articles, plurals, and punctuation before submitting.
