Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make a broad comparison between men and women, then give a specific example for the youngest age group. However, the response covers only a small part of the data: it does not describe the other age groups or provide a clear overview of the main patterns, such as the substantial rise among older women and the high licence rates for men in 2006. The figures for 17–20-year-olds are also somewhat overstated: the chart shows about 36% and 37% for men, and 20% and 33% for women, rather than 38%, 39% and 38%. At 78 words, the response is well below the required 150, leaving the task minimally addressed. Add an overview and compare several age groups accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, gives a general statement, and then focuses on one age group. This makes the topic understandable, and the use of “Overall” signals an attempt to summarise. However, the ideas are not developed into a clear progression, and the response ends without covering the wider comparisons. The second sentence’s contrast between men and women is not followed by supporting details, while the final sentence combines several comparisons in a crowded structure. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview, and one or two detail paragraphs grouped by sex or age. Use linking expressions such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile” to make relationships between figures clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “holding,” “age,” and “rise,” so the reader can identify the subject and the direction of change. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “owning licence” and “women number rise dramaticaly.” The repeated use of “rise” also limits precision when describing changes across the two years. Spelling and capitalisation errors, including “dramaticaly” and “great Britain,” reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional data-reporting language, for example “the proportion of women holding a licence increased markedly.” Vary verbs with “climbed,” “grew,” or “remained broadly stable,” choosing each to match the figures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts more than isolated phrases: it includes a chart-introduction sentence, an overview, and a comparison using “while.” These structures communicate the basic topic, but the range is limited and errors recur. For example, “The Bar graph compares” needs an article and consistent capitalisation, while “in between 1975/76 and 2006” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. In “Men age between 17-20 … were owning licence,” the noun phrase and verb construction are faulty; “men aged 17–20 held a licence” would be clearer. The final sentence also shifts between past forms and lacks reliable punctuation. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simple comparative clauses before attempting longer sentences.
