Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The illustrated graphs represents the driving licence holders of Great Britain which has been catagorized by sex and age of the citizens. The combined bar graph has shown the age group of each gender holding full car driver licence comparing the data of 1975/76 with 2006.

During 1975/76 women aged between 30-39 years was the age range with highest number of licence holder, and women who were above 70 were the least to hold the driver licence. Although according to the data of 2006 among the women aged between 40-49 years nearly 80% of them hold the driving licence which is the highest among other age category.

Talking about Men during 1975/76 men more than 80% who were aged between 30-39 years hold the licence, which is the same age category with women during that time. Currently nearly 90% men aged between 50-59 years holds the licence.

In comparing both sex, we can conclude that at all age category the percentage of men holding licence is higher than that of women.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several relevant extremes, including women aged 30–39 as the highest female group in 1975/76 and women aged 70 and over as the lowest, and you note the near-80% figure for women aged 40–49 in 2006. However, the overview is incomplete: the final claim that men had higher licence-holding percentages in every age group is inaccurate, since women slightly exceeded men among 30–39-year-olds in 2006 (78% versus 87%? Actually men were higher), and among 17–20-year-olds in 2006 men were also higher. More importantly, the response gives few direct comparisons across the two years and overlooks the broad rise among women and older men. Develop the main trends and use accurate figures to support them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction followed by discussion of women, men, and a concluding comparison. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Although,” “Talking about Men,” and “In comparing both sex” signal transitions, but some are awkward or do not express the relationship precisely; “Although” does not introduce a contrasting clause here. The discussion also moves between selected age groups without a consistent comparison pattern, and the conclusion repeats a broad claim rather than synthesising the key trends. Organise the body by year or by sex, then compare the same age groups systematically. Clearer referencing and more purposeful transitions would make progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “age group,” “percentage,” “licence holder,” and “comparing,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some variety in expressions such as “highest” and “least,” but the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural. For example, “number of licence holder” refers to a count, whereas the chart reports percentages, and “currently” is not a precise way to refer to 2006. Spelling errors such as “catagorized” are noticeable, while “driver licence” and “driving licence” are used inconsistently. Aim for accurate chart language and natural collocations, such as “proportion of people holding a full driving licence” and “the highest percentage.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause beginning “Although according to the data of 2006,” and the main meaning is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “The illustrated graphs represents” should use a plural verb, while “women aged between 30-39 years was” needs a plural subject and verb. In “nearly 80% of them hold,” the tense should match the past reference to 2006, and “men … holds” also has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “Although” is incomplete in its current construction. Use past tense consistently for both years and check agreement and sentence boundaries when revising.
