Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph shows the percentage of men and women carrying full driving licences in year 1975 ,1976 and 2006 from age variation starting 17 to 20 upto 70 and above.

Overall, mens number shows a higher trend in year 1975/76 upto the age group of 39 with the gradual dicrease in the numbers in the same year above the age group of 40 untill 70 and above. On the other hand, womens showed less interest in holing license in the earlier years throughout the whole age group as compared to year 2006 where numbers are rising upto the age group of 40 to 49.

In year 1975/76 mens numbers are incresing till reaching the higher upto almost 90 percent upto the age group of 30-39 and then gradually decreasing the numbers around 38 percent in the age group of 70 and above whereas, in year 2006 the numbers are rising upto 90 percent till the age group of 50-59, being constant in the age group of 60-69 and then just below the 80 percent in the upper age group.

On the contrary, womens showed least interest in holding the license in age group of 70 and over nearly touching 1-2 percent in year 1975/76 and the higher in age group of 30-39 reaching high upto 45 percent. On the other hand trends started changinf in year 2006 with numbers reaching high upto 79 percent in age group of 40-49 and in least case it remained higher than in year 1975/76.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both sexes and both time periods, and your overview identifies the broad contrast: men had higher licence-holding rates in 1975/76, while women’s figures rose substantially by 2006. Several details are also well selected, including women’s low of about 3% among those aged 70 and over in 1975/76 and their peak of roughly 79% among 40–49-year-olds in 2006. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, men’s 1975/76 figures peak at about 81% for ages 40–49, not around 90% for ages 30–39; and the 2006 male figure for ages 60–69 is about 91%, rather than being constant after the 50–59 group. The overview also misses the notable fall among younger men in 2006 compared with 1975/76. More precise comparisons would strengthen an otherwise relevant summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing men and women. This makes the main categories easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the contrary” and “On the other hand” signal comparisons. However, some linking is mechanical or does not express the relationship accurately; “On the contrary” introduces another set of figures rather than a direct contradiction. The overview also combines several trends in a long sentence, making the comparison harder to track. Within the detail paragraphs, figures are sometimes listed without a clear comparison between the two years. Organise each paragraph around a clear pattern—such as the change over time and the age-group extremes—and use linking phrases only where they clarify that relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “percentage,” “age group,” “gradual decrease,” and “reaching” a high figure. This gives you enough range to communicate the main trends, but imprecise collocations and repeated wording limit clarity and flexibility. For instance, “mens number” and “womens showed less interest” are not suitable ways to describe statistical rates; the chart reports licence-holding percentages, not people’s interest. “Numbers are rising” is also vague when you mean the proportion of licence holders. Spelling errors such as “dicrease,” “incresing,” and “changinf” further reduce accuracy. Use precise chart language consistently, such as “the proportion of men holding licences,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences with contrast and time clauses, as in “On the other hand, womens showed less interest … as compared to year 2006.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur in several places. The opening phrase “in year 1975, 1976 and 2006 from age variation” is not a complete, well-formed description, while “the higher upto almost 90 percent” lacks a clear grammatical structure. There are also problems with articles, possessives, and agreement, for example “in the least case it remained higher” and “mens numbers are incresing.” Aim for shorter, complete sentences, and check articles, plural forms, and subject–verb agreement when describing each figure.
