Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad pattern that women’s licence-holding increased and that men remained ahead in most age groups, and you include a few relevant comparisons, such as men aged 50–59 reaching about 90% in 2006. However, the response only partially summarises the chart: it gives little coverage of the age groups and does not clearly compare both years across the main trends. Some figures are inaccurate or unclear; for example, the 1975/76 figures for ages 21–29 are about 78% for men and 43% for women, not simply “80% and 42%” without clear attribution. The final point is unfinished. The response is also 6 words below the required minimum. Select the main contrasts and report them accurately in a complete overview and body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, and later comparisons, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the comparisons shift between years, sexes, and age groups without a consistent structure. The sentence beginning “In 1975 to 1976” is especially unclear about which figures belong to which sex, while “However, overall” combines ideas that do not connect smoothly. The final fragment, “Aging women was,” leaves the response incomplete. Group the information by year or by sex, use one clear comparison per sentence, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “peak,” and “in contrast,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the intended meaning unclear. For example, “started to apply for vehicle license” does not naturally describe the proportion of people who held licences, and “men started the trend” is vague. “Dramatically increased in numbers” is also imprecise because the chart reports percentages, not numbers of people. Aim for precise reporting language such as “the proportion holding a full licence rose,” and use consistent terms for age bands and licence holders. Check spelling, including “compared” and “licence.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few longer structures, including a comparison with “whereas” and a contrast introduced by “However,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in verb forms and agreement appear in phrases such as “Women had dramatically increased” and “Men was at peak”; the sentence “the man is dominating at every year” also has an unclear tense and structure. Articles and sentence construction are problematic in “the man started to apply for vehicle license,” and the final words form an incomplete clause. These errors make several comparisons difficult to interpret. Practise building accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them with “while” or “whereas.” Check subject–verb agreement and keep past-tense reporting consistent when describing the two chart years.
