Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given bar graphs presents the trend of the men and women holding their full driving licence in Great Britain in 1975/76 and 2006.

Overall, in 1975/76 men had the highest proportion of driving licence. On the other hand, women had the lowest proportion in 2006 in Great Britain.

In detail, the age group 17-20 men had the same percentages holding full car driving licence almost 39% in 1975/76 and 2006. In early time, the age group 21-29 to 40-49 the trend goes up at 79% to 81%, after the age 50-59 to over 70 years men holding the full car driving licences trend dramatically shrink at 78% to 26%. moreover, the men age group 21-29 to 60-69 the trend increase rapidly which is at 65% to 85% in 2006, but age over 70 they had full car driving licence slightly down by 75%. While, women had the lowest proportion in 1975/76 , the age group over 70 they holding full car driving licence only 2% and the highest proportion had 79% to 80% in 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two years and both sexes, and you attempt an overview, but the main features are not accurately or clearly summarised. The statement that men had the highest proportion in 1975/76 is too broad, while saying women had the lowest proportion in 2006 overlooks that women’s figures rose substantially and that the youngest group remained relatively low. Several details are misreported: men aged 17–20 were about 36–37%, not almost 39% as a meaningful trend; the older men’s figures did not shrink from 78% to 26%; and the 21–29 to 60–69 comparison is not 65% to 85%. Select a few reliable comparisons and describe the overall rise among women and older men, while noting the different pattern among younger men.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, an overview, and a detail paragraph, so there is a basic attempt to organise the report. However, the progression within the detail paragraph is difficult to follow: it moves between age groups, years, and sexes without a consistent order. Phrases such as “In early time” and “moreover” do not make the relationships between comparisons clear, and the overview repeats the claim about women having the lowest proportion. Group the information by sex or by year, and compare corresponding age groups in a predictable sequence. Clearer referencing and fewer, more accurate linking phrases would help the reader follow the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “age group,” “trend,” and “full car driving licence,” and you attempt to describe change with words such as “increase” and “shrink.” However, several choices are repetitive or do not fit the data-reporting context naturally. “The trend dramatically shrink” is an awkward collocation, while “had the highest proportion of driving licence” is imprecise. Repeated use of “trend” also makes the account less specific. Build a more accurate range for describing percentages and comparisons, and choose verbs that state what happened to the figures rather than referring vaguely to a trend. These improvements would make the report clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, but control is uneven, particularly when combining age groups and comparisons. For example, “The given bar graphs presents” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the age group over 70 they holding” lacks a correctly formed verb. In “the trend dramatically shrink,” the verb form is also incorrect. Some sentences contain several clauses joined with commas, making the relationships harder to understand. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and sentence patterns such as “The proportion of men aged 60–69 rose from … to …”. Check agreement, articles, and punctuation, and divide long comparisons into shorter sentences.
