Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the percentage of people holding full driving licenses in great Britain by age and sex.

Overall, the chart consists of seven age groups ranging from 17-20 to 70 and over. Both men and women had increased percentage of driving licence holders in 2006 as compared to 1975/76.

To begin with, in 1975/76, man had a higher percentage of driving licence as compared with women. The youngest group (17-20) and the eldest group (70 and over) of males had comparatively low figures with less than 40%, while the middle-aged groups (30-39, 40-49 and 50-59) had relatively high percentage.

In 2006, the middle-aged groups (30-39, 40-49 and 50-59) of both men and women's car licences ownership experienced a noticeable rise, while the aged group of men from 21 to 29 declined slightly. Moreover, in 2006, especially women's car licence holders experienced a dramatical increment in its percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s age groups and make a relevant overall comparison, noting that licence holding generally increased by 2006 and that men had higher figures in 1975/76. However, the overview is too broad: the increase was not universal, since men aged 21–29 fell from about 78% to 70%, while the youngest men changed little. Your details about the middle-aged groups are also imprecise, and the claim that both sexes’ middle-aged groups rose overlooks that women aged 30–39 and 40–49 increased substantially but the key pattern needs clearer support with figures. The response is one word below the required minimum. Include a more precise overview and select a few representative comparisons across both sexes and years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs beginning with “To begin with” and “In 2006.” This makes the main stages easy to follow, and the contrast between the two years provides a workable organising principle. However, the progression is not fully developed: the first detail paragraph focuses on men in 1975/76, while the final paragraph shifts between both sexes and several age groups without a clear sequence or specific supporting figures. Phrases such as “Moreover” add a link, but the relationship between the final points is not always clear. Organise the details consistently—for example, compare men and women within each year—and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age groups,” “middle-aged,” “declined,” and “rise,” so the chart is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “experienced a noticeable rise.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “percentage of driving licence” is incomplete, “car licences ownership” is unnatural, and “a dramatical increment” is not idiomatic. “Man” is also used where the plural “men” is needed, and spelling varies between “licenses” and “licence.” Choose standard chart language such as “proportion of licence holders,” “licence ownership,” and “a dramatic increase,” and use one consistent spelling convention.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You produce a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the comparison “Both men and women had increased percentage … as compared to 1975/76” and the sentence beginning “while the aged group of men … declined slightly.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “Both men and women had increased percentage” needs an article or a different construction, and “man had a higher percentage” has a number-agreement problem. In “women’s car licence holders experienced … in its percentage,” the possessive and pronoun references do not agree clearly. The response also relies heavily on past-tense forms and does not consistently express chart comparisons precisely. Practise accurate plural forms, articles, and sentence patterns for describing changes and proportions.
