IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the modern world, with the increasing use of the internet, many students prefer studying English by themselves instead of taking an English-language course. I partly agree with this statement as it allows the student to work harder towards learning the language, but the lack of assistance from a teacher makes the learning process harder.

On the one hand, self-study motivates students to do their research by themselves, take notes and develop the habit of self-studying. It accelerates the learning process as the students can study any time, as they do not have to rely on their teachers. For example, mobile applications like Duolingo help students learn a language whenever the student feels like learning, irrespective of the time and situation.

On the other hand, a lack of proper assistance from a teacher leads to students feeling misguided. Teachers are very vital in the process of learning, as they teach the students according to the students' understanding level. They can determine where the students are struggling and put more effort into that specific section. Self-studying can make it harder to point out mistakes and learn complex concepts. For example, the grammatical part of English-language is very complex and difficult to learn without proper help from a teacher.

To conclude, I would like to say that self-study is very crucial in the learning process as it develops the habit of daily studying and managing time schedule. However, the proper assistance of a teacher is very significant, as a student often feels lost without proper guidance and help.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is maintained throughout. The arguments for both self-study and teacher-led instruction are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Duolingo and the complexity of English grammar. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the 'misguided' aspect by explaining specific consequences of lacking feedback, such as the fossilization of errors. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, ensuring the response is well-balanced and directly answers the 'to what extent' question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to signal the transition between ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the self-study benefits and the necessity of teacher guidance is clearly articulated. The flow of information is easy to follow, and referencing is generally clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accelerates', 'irrespective', and 'fossilization' (implied by 'point out mistakes'). While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the sophistication and 'less common' lexical items required for higher bands. There is some repetition of basic words like 'students' and 'learning'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or academic synonyms. For instance, instead of 'very vital', you could use 'indispensable' or 'crucial'. The word choice is generally appropriate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and your sentences are generally error-free. There are some minor issues, such as 'the grammatical part of English-language is very complex', where 'the' is unnecessary, and 'managing time schedule', which would be more natural as 'managing their schedules'. While you use some complex structures, increasing the variety of subordinate clauses and using more sophisticated punctuation would enhance the range. Overall, your grammar is accurate enough that it never causes confusion for the reader.
