Student answer (Band 8.5)

Nowadays, a large number of students prefer to study English independently rather than enroll in formal language courses. While self-study offers several advantages, I believe that learning without the guidance of a teacher can limit a student's progress. Therefore, I partly agree with the statement that students often find it difficult to manage their studies without professional assistance.

On the one hand, self-study has become increasingly popular because it provides flexibility and convenience. Students can learn whenever and wherever they want, making it easier to balance their studies with work or other responsibilities. In addition, the internet offers countless learning resources, including online courses, educational videos, mobile applications, and practice tests. Learners can focus on the specific areas they need to improve, such as vocabulary, grammar, or listening. For example, many people preparing for international examinations like IELTS successfully improve their reading and listening skills by using online materials and practising regularly without attending coaching classes.

On the other hand, studying alone has several limitations. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of expert feedback. Students may repeatedly make the same grammar, pronunciation, or writing mistakes without realizing them. A qualified teacher can identify these errors, provide personalized guidance, and explain difficult concepts more effectively. Furthermore, teachers help students stay disciplined and motivated by setting clear goals and monitoring their progress. This support is especially valuable for beginners, who often struggle to choose appropriate study materials and develop effective learning strategies. As a result, students who receive professional guidance are generally more confident and make faster progress.

In conclusion, although self-study is an effective and economical way to improve English skills, it cannot completely replace the role of an experienced teacher. I believe the most successful approach is to combine independent learning with regular guidance from a qualified instructor. This balanced method allows students to enjoy the flexibility of self-study while also benefiting from expert feedback, structured learning, and continuous motivation, ultimately leading to better language proficiency and long-term success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments for both self-study and teacher-led instruction are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of IELTS preparation. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your position, suggesting a balanced approach. The ideas are extended logically, and the response is well-focused on the topic throughout, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of self-study and the necessity of teacher guidance is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'professional guidance,' 'long-term success,' and 'language proficiency' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common lexical items, and your word choice is generally precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient and natural, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further. There are no spelling errors, and the language used is consistently clear and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While self-study offers several advantages, I believe that...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. The flow is natural, and there are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The variety of structures used—from simple to complex—is well-balanced, contributing to a fluent and sophisticated reading experience.
