A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

As English has become an international language it is almost necessary for everyone to get the know how of the language to compete the challenges. Some students thus choose to prefer on their own instead of getting a formal school based learning. It is believed that it is difficult for students to learn properly without having a proper guidance from a tutor. I strongly agree to the statement as teachers play a vital role in learning something and to get command over an unknown language there must be proper instructor.

First of all teacher have the experience to how to teach they are properly trained for that they know the learning patterns they know how to start the and how to get command over the subject on the other hand if someone starts learning independently he may not know the proper path which ultimately lead to disappointments.

Secondly, to get coaching you have to go to the academy or to a proper institute where you have the other fellows having the same interests who can lift your mood when under stress. You have the luxury to discuss your ideas with others and this can cause the boost in the English learning process as on the other hand learning solely can cause stress and you can easily loose your mind which ends up in failure to learn English language.

As contrast solo learning can be sometime very satisfying because when you achieve your goals independently you become more confident and feel proud for yourself.

In conclusion, the importance of having a teacher for learning English language can never be denied but it can be more beneficial if you have proper coaching along with your individual efforts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the benefits of a teacher (experience, training, and social support) are relevant. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'losing your mind' is an over-generalisation and lacks academic tone. While the counter-argument is mentioned, it is not fully integrated into the main argument, making the overall development slightly uneven. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides more specific examples or logical depth rather than relying on broad assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. Phrases like 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' are used, but the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes abrupt. For example, the second paragraph lacks a smooth link between the teacher's training and the student's potential for disappointment. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'these') is precise would significantly enhance the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'get the know how', 'compete the challenges', and 'loose your mind' (which should be 'lose'). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but the lack of sophisticated or idiomatic language limits the score. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to education and academic study, and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include missing articles ('the' teacher), subject-verb agreement ('teacher have'), and run-on sentences or comma splices. For example, 'First of all teacher have the experience to how to teach they are properly trained...' is grammatically fragmented. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundary punctuation and basic grammatical accuracy will be key to improvement.
