Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, a higher number of students have decided to study English independently, instead of attending formal courses as ussual. However, without appropriate guidance by teachers, students often find it challenging to manage their studies. Although studing by one's self can be difficult because the assistance of teacher is essential in the learning yourney, I agree with the idea of studying english independently, as it allows learners manage their own schedules and save some money.

One major reason why studying independently can be beneficial is that students enjoy more flexible schedules. Students who decide to study by themselves have the flexibility of studying at the time that best suits them. This is particularly convenient when people already have demanding work schedules or other important activities, allowing them to study after finishing their daily responsibilities. As a result, individuals learn a new language despite having to huggle a wide range of tasks daily.

Another important reason is that it can be more affordable. Computers, smartphones and other digital devices have become an important part of people's lives and provide instant accest to learning resources. Consequently, people no longer need to pay large amounts of money to learn a foreign language, as they often already have the essential digital tools for this purpose. This allows them to save money, while also benefiting from the vast array of information that modern technology provides.

Nevertheless, studying independently may not be suitable for everyone. Teachers provide guidance, support and feedback all of which are essential for learning a language more effectively. Furthermore, social interaction and practical experience is also necessary for a more well-rounded education. However, this challenges can be overcome by enrolling in English classes, which are generally widely available.

In conclusion, the main advantages of studying independently are affordable prices and time-management. Although many students may present some difficulties when studying alone, they can still choose to enroll in English courses that help them achieve their learning goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that balances the benefits of independent study with the necessity of teacher guidance. The ideas are well-developed, particularly regarding flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The student acknowledges the counter-argument regarding the need for teacher support, which adds depth to the discussion. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while maintaining the initial stance. The response is well-structured and directly answers the 'to what extent' question, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason,' 'Another important reason,' and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to link ideas. While some transitions are standard, they function well to maintain flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, contributing to a coherent overall structure that meets the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'demanding work schedules,' 'vast array of information,' and 'well-rounded education' show a good command of language. However, there are some minor spelling errors ('ussual,' 'learning yourney,' 'accest,' 'huggle') and occasional word choice issues. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over complex sentences, such as 'Although studying by one's self can be difficult because the assistance of teacher is essential...' However, there are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the assistance of a teacher') and minor subject-verb agreement issues ('this challenges can be overcome'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control of grammar is consistent with a Band 6.5.
