IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the past few decades, the relevance of the English language has become even more evident than it was in the past. It is present everywhere, and is the official language across several countries. Hence, many people strive for fluency in the language, with some opting for self-studying. However, a select portion of people claim that managing such studies is difficult without direct supervision of a teacher or tutor. This essay will cover why I disagree with this viewpoint, as I believe that investing money on such resources isn't completely necessary.

When placed side-by-side, English is a fundementally simpler language compared to Mandarin and Japanese, which have a long list of letters and consonants to be learnt and are generally considered one of the world's hardest languages. Though it can be confusing at times with a lot of overlapping meanings of the same words or interesting pronunciations, it is often considered one of the easiest languages to pick up. Personally, my native language is Arabic, but I enjoy speaking English over Arabic due to its relative simplicity. Arabic is complicated, with many grammar rules and variations for a single word. Though English adopts a similar system, it is still a lot easier to grasp.

This mainly comes down to the spread of the English language worldwide, that it has made it difficult to not pick it up at some point in your life. It is present in social media, transport systems, airlines and is the original language of many of the best movies. Therefore, intensive studies will not be necessary unless you wish to study literature, which in that case you will be looking more at Latin rather than modern English. There are so many ways to learn English swiftly free-of-charge. All you need to do is surround yourself with it, which will not be an issue as it is present at every turn you take and every restaurant you step into.

Of course, it is all dependent on the individual's capabilities and their drive to reach fluency, but I generally believe that courses will not be necessary. You do not need to formally study English, all you need to do is indulge in English films and novels. It could also be as simple as converting your language settings to English only. Hence, picking it up is absolutely manageable.

Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of referencing is generally accurate throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluency', 'supervision', 'fundamentally', and 'intensive studies'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'a select portion of people' (which sounds a bit unnatural in this context) or 'interesting pronunciations'. There is a minor spelling error ('fundementally'), but this does not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and academic phrases to enhance the sophistication of your writing, as your current range is sufficient but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Though it can be confusing at times... it is often considered one of the easiest languages to pick up.' Your control of grammar is generally good, and most sentences are clear. To achieve a higher score, aim for more varied sentence patterns and ensure that your complex sentences are consistently error-free.
