IELTS Writing Task 2 question
A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.
To what extent do you agree or disagree ?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Generally, English remains one of the most technical subjects around the world and needs assistance while studying. I strongly disagree with the notion that students should self study rather than attend formal courses and classes for various reasons.
Firstly, English is a course that require a trained professional to help coach students for various reasons including making sure words are pronounced accurately, grammar and vocabulary, writing of letters and language composition. Despite individuals being able to locate lectures of these topics and sub-courses in the internet, it is advisable to have someone physically available to teach better.
Secondly, distractions from other chat engines can disrupt the learning process for all courses while using the internet to study while studying with a physical assistant can help one focus more and be more invested in the teachings. Moreover, assignments given by the internet are not likely to get submitted there by decreasing the chances of corrections to be made and learnt while having a teacher gives you access to those corrections.
Furthermore, learning or educating one’s self on a course that one is not so conversant with is like pouring water into a basket and expecting it to hold. Knowledge needs to be acquired from not only from search engines but also assistants and lecturers that have a knowing to the course.
In conclusion, despite the importance of learning and studying by one’s self , it is important to learn in classrooms with active individuals who are ready to teach and make corrections, giving students the opportunity to ask questions where confused and to learn from their mistakes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against self-study. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention distractions and the lack of feedback as reasons, these points are not fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the analogy of 'pouring water into a basket' is a good attempt at illustration, but it lacks a concrete connection to the learning process. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more detailed explanation of how a teacher specifically overcomes the challenges mentioned, rather than just stating that they are necessary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to signal the progression of your argument. However, the flow between some sentences feels slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the second paragraph where 'these topics' refers back to a list that was not explicitly defined. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is a strength.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'conversant', 'composition', and 'notion'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'technical subjects' is not the most natural way to describe English, and 'have a knowing to the course' is non-standard phrasing. Additionally, 'chat engines' is a bit informal. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary that fits the context of formal education.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'English is a course that require' should be 'requires' (subject-verb agreement), and 'not only from search engines but also assistants' is missing a preposition. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'in the internet' instead of 'on the internet'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable grasp of sentence construction.
