Student answer (Band 6.5)

A significant number of students prefer studying English independently rather than admission in an English language course. As a consequence of this, they find it arduous to manage their studies. As far as my opinion is concerned, I completely agree to this notion.

To begin with, learning any language is a highly demanding and laborious task. It cannot be juxtaposed to learning any other skill. It includes variety of activities and tasks especially designed for acquiring language in a seamless manner. Additionally teachers are equipped with indispensable expertise and years of experience as language instructors. They effortlessly analyse the

learning capacity and current language status of students and deal with them accordingly. They organise the classroom activities and home task based on the learning level of student. They utilise distinct second language acquisition models and theories to facilitate the students and help them in acquiring English.

In the contemporary era, a vast number of students assume that language can be learnt with the assistance of technology and social media. As they have learnt major skills via internet, they believe language would also be acquired in the same way. However, they do not understand Language acquisition is a highly cognitive and time taking phenomenon. Internet can strengthen their already developed skills of English but it cannot make the foundation of a language. As a result of that, they choose self study and waste their time. For instance, when I decided to learn Japanese, I was also into self study. Nevertheless, even after splurging significant amount of time, I did not even learn basic Hiragana and Katakana. Ultimately, I realised my mistake and made up my mind to join an institute.

To conclude, acquiring any language is a quite challenging and time consuming task. Self study can improve the already present skills of a language but cannot train a student to proficiently acquire the basics of major skills of language. So, it is highly recommended to join a language institute or academy for learning English or any other targeted language.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. You effectively argue why teacher-led instruction is superior to self-study, supporting your stance with a relevant personal anecdote about learning Japanese. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between using technology to supplement existing skills versus building a foundation. To reach a higher band, you could further explore the potential benefits of self-study (e.g., flexibility or cost-effectiveness) to provide a more balanced, nuanced discussion before refuting them, which would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking and task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'In the contemporary era', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'As a consequence of this' which could be more tightly linked to the preceding sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including academic and topic-specific terms like 'juxtaposed', 'indispensable expertise', 'second language acquisition', and 'cognitive'. There is an awareness of style and collocation, though some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'admission in an English language course' (should be 'enrolling in') and 'splurging significant amount of time' (which is slightly informal/incorrect in this context). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and effectively throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional and relative clauses used in your arguments. While the majority of your sentences are error-free, there are occasional slips, such as 'It includes variety of activities' (missing an article: 'a variety') and 'home task' (should be 'homework'). Punctuation is generally sound, though some sentences could benefit from more careful proofreading to ensure subject-verb agreement and article usage. The errors present do not impede communication, and your control over complex structures is generally good, supporting a solid band 7 performance.
