Student answer (Band 7.5)
In recent years, a huge number of students have chosen to study English independently rather than attend formal courses. While some people argue that self-study is an effective way of learning a language, others believe that students require the assistance of a teacher to manage their studies successfully. From my perspective, although independent learning can offer greater flexibility, I firmly believe that teacher guidance is essential for students to make consistent and effective progress.
The primary reason for my view is that teachers provide learners with appropriate guidance and a structured learning programme. This is largely because studying a language independently can make it difficult for students to identify their weaknesses and determine which areas require greater attention. When learners follow a well-organised programme under the supervision of a teacher, they can develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a balanced manner. A clear example of this can be seen in students preparing for English proficiency examinations, where teachers can identify recurring grammatical and vocabulary errors and provide suitable exercises to address them. Therefore, it is evident that professional guidance can make the learning process more systematic and productive.
Another compelling argument is that teachers provide immediate feedback and help students remain motivated. In other words, learners can receive direct explanations when they make mistakes instead of repeatedly practising incorrect language patterns. This is particularly important because language learning requires regular practice and long-term commitment. For instance, a student studying English independently may repeatedly pronounce certain words incorrectly without realising the problem, whereas a teacher can identify the mistake and demonstrate the correct pronunciation. As a consequence, students are more likely to improve accurately and remain committed to their studies, making it reasonable to conclude that teacher assistance plays a significant role in successful language acquisition.
In conclusion, although self-study may offer flexibility and allow students to learn at their own pace, I remain convinced that studying with the assistance of a teacher is more effective. This is because teachers provide structured guidance, immediate feedback and continued motivation. Ultimately, independent study can complement formal education, but it is unlikely to completely replace the value of professional instruction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct, relevant argument—structured guidance and immediate feedback—supported by logical explanations and illustrative examples. The conclusion effectively summarises your stance while acknowledging the counter-argument. The response is well-balanced and demonstrates a strong understanding of the task requirements, providing a comprehensive answer to the question of whether teacher assistance is necessary for language learners.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the supporting points follow a natural flow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The primary reason for my view', 'In other words', 'For instance', and 'As a consequence', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, two main body paragraphs, and the conclusion. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent, making the essay very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the academic context. You use less common lexical items such as 'systematic', 'language acquisition', 'recurring', and 'complement' with precision. The collocations are natural, and there is no evidence of word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is consistently accurate and appropriate, it could perhaps be slightly more adventurous to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high score. Your control over academic register is excellent throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a wide range of grammatical structures with high accuracy. You successfully use complex sentences, such as 'While some people argue that... others believe that...', and 'Although independent learning can offer greater flexibility, I firmly believe that...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and verb tenses is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader or cause confusion. The complexity of your sentence construction is appropriate for an academic task, showing a high level of grammatical competence.
