Student answer (Band 6.5)

A great amount of students came to a conclusion that studying English on their own is more effective than attending classes. However, without the assistance of a lecturer the usually find it difficult to manage .

I strongly agree with the notion that English should be studied with the assistance of a teacher for many reasons.

Firstly, English language is a subject that need maximum understanding and guidance for trained personnel for so many reasons including for correction, help in pronunciation and for progressive understanding. Despite it being convenient for individuals to learn at their own time and pace without the intrusion of any other person, it is rather adviced to have someone who is trained to assist in knowledgeable correction.

Secondly, it is a very technical subject that requires not only understanding but also participation thereby asking for inter and intra class participation where individuals get to practice with others to know the level they have achieved in the subject. Learning in a class room with other students also help in subject object corrections where not only the teacher but also students get to learn from each other.

Furthermore, learning in a classroom is also important to reduce the level of distractions learning alone can bring about. Studying at their comfort of one’s home give him or her the opportunity to move around, play with mobile devices and also remain less concentrated in studying unlike when one is subjected to pay attention for a given time till the classes it over.

In conclusion, I agree that studying English is more effective with a lecture and a classroom than alone at one’s comfort because it not only keeps an environment that is suitable for the lesson but also help in corrections from both teacher and students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your agreement, such as the need for professional guidance, the benefits of peer interaction, and the reduction of distractions. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point regarding 'progressive understanding' is mentioned but not fully explained with concrete examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is supported by a specific illustration or a more detailed explanation of the 'why' and 'how'. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, and your stance is clear from the introduction to the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the progression is generally clear, some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing; for example, in the third paragraph, the phrase 'subject object corrections' is unclear and disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'notion', 'intrusion', 'technical subject', and 'progressive understanding'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'adviced to have' (should be 'advised'), 'subject object corrections' (which is unclear), and 'at their comfort of one’s home' (should be 'in the comfort of one's home'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your expression. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('English language is a subject that need', 'students... help in subject object corrections'), incorrect verb forms ('adviced'), and awkward phrasing ('till the classes it over'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies. The errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your main points. Increasing your focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and subject-verb agreement will help you move to a higher band.
