A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Teachers make work easy for students, they show the right path to students because they learned it from their experiences. Those students who choose to study from the teacher would be able to find their path easy and will approve their english in the guidance of their teacher. For example, if any student is facing any issue the teacher will guide him and help him.

On the other hand, those who believe in self-study may face some difficulties. But if they are you to it then it would be easier for them to study on their own. The advantage of self-study is that they don’t need to follow the course outline or any timetable or any kind of specific resource to study. You will decide when to study, where to study and how to study. If I take myself as an example and want to study on my on, I would do some research that which youtube channel is best or should I study through AI or some google resources and then I have to make my schedule and then follow it regularly.

So, for those students who don’t want to do any kind of research on their on and they agree to follow course outline and timetable given by their teacher are good to go and those who believe in themselves and believe in their on research must study on their own, in this way, they would experience how to tackle problems and how to do research on something.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the benefits of teacher-led instruction and self-study. However, the position is not clearly defined; the essay presents arguments for both sides without taking a firm stance on the extent of agreement or disagreement. The ideas are somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the 'path' or 'guidance' provided by teachers. To improve, you should state your position clearly in the introduction and ensure each body paragraph develops a distinct, well-supported argument that directly relates to your overall thesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'On the other hand' and 'So' are used, but the transition between ideas within paragraphs is often abrupt. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'But if they are you to it', which appears to be a typo for 'used to it'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is significant repetition of basic words like 'study', 'teacher', and 'path'. Additionally, there are several word-choice errors, such as 'approve their english' (likely meaning 'improve') and 'on their on' (a recurring spelling error for 'own'). To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more academic vocabulary and ensure correct spelling and collocation throughout your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'those students who choose to study from the teacher would be able to find their path easy'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences that lack proper conjunctions or full stops. To improve, focus on mastering complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and basic spelling.
