Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, learning an English course has emerged as a highly debated issue. While a segment of people believe that it has a higher impact on society, others strongly oppose this notion. From my viewpoint, I firmly agree with the given notion, as it offers a multitude of significant disadvantages.

To commence with, the compelling reason for supporting my viewpoint is that learning a literature subject without the guidance of teachers puts a student in a difficult situation. When individuals study by themselves, it not only creates problems for them but also makes their base weak. In addition, while communicating with others, they speak English with inappropriate grammar knowledge. For example, they articulate in front of others by choosing wrong tenses of grammar. That's why educational institutes make this course mandatory for everyone to learn the basic structure of grammar, which they can easily use in their upcoming life. Hence, independent study will not proliferate a pupil's knowledge.

Another noteworthy justification is that people think an independent study will be cost-effective for them as they do not have to pay a hefty amount to English professors, but they do not realize that this will create a major drawback for their future. Furthermore, after graduating, people mostly preferred to move abroad to polish their careers, but they failed to attempt an English language proficiency test. For instance, for study or immigration, these tests are mandatory by every citizen, and people feel this test is just a piece of cake and attempt it by themselves rather than enrolling in any institutes. Therefore, this will create a significant amount of stress by a community after getting worse bands.

To sum up, teachers have ample amount of knowledge, which they provide to their learners, so definitely they makes their foundation

strong by giving a correct structure of grammar and a wide range of

vocabularies, which will be valuable for every student to shape their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of formal instruction over self-study. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding 'inappropriate grammar knowledge' is repetitive and lacks specific examples of how a teacher specifically corrects these issues beyond general statements. The introduction is also slightly off-topic, as it discusses whether learning English is a 'debated issue' rather than focusing on the specific dilemma of self-study versus formal courses. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete, nuanced examples of the pedagogical benefits of a teacher, such as personalized feedback or structured curriculum design, rather than relying on general assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In addition', and 'To sum up' to link your points. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'To commence with' being followed by a very short paragraph. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear; for instance, the phrase 'this will create a significant amount of stress by a community' is confusing and does not clearly link back to the previous point about immigration tests. Improving the variety and natural flow of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'proliferate', and 'noteworthy justification'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors that hinder precision. For example, 'learning an English course' is unnatural; 'taking an English course' or 'studying English' would be better. Similarly, 'proliferate a pupil's knowledge' is an incorrect use of the verb 'proliferate'. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'make their base weak' and 'make their foundation strong'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'they makes their foundation strong' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'these tests are mandatory by every citizen' is an incorrect use of the passive voice. You also have issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in front of others by choosing wrong tenses of grammar'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
