Student answer (Band 6.0)

I know that that a large number of students have chosen to learn English on their own without enrolling in a formal course. Nevertheless, students often find it hard to understand and develop their studies well when they are not guided by a teacher, Therefore, I agree strongly that every student needs assistance from a teacher in order to build their study structure better.

It is certain that students who study English without depending on tutors may understand simple language structure. However, when they start going deeper into difficult topics in the subject area, they will begin finding it difficult to breakdown some terms in ways it can be easier to learn. This comes as a result of not having anyone close who knows the course better to guide one in assimilating that hard topic.

Moreover, every subject area has professions who have been trained to always help students who are coming in new in that area to learn and understand better both the simple and complex topics in the course which the students when left to study independently cannot divide all topics into units it can be well understood by them. It is only those who have passed through the educational stages in learning the course can handle every piece of the subject, and still deliver it in a way that all students will take in, and can then learn well when on their own.

In conclusion, there is nothing wrong with students deciding to study on their own in certain times but they must ensure they get admitted into schools with professionals in those subject areas who can assist and guide them in learning and understanding better.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the difficulty of self-study and the necessity of professional guidance are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks specific, concrete examples. For instance, the explanation of why independent study is difficult remains at a general level rather than exploring specific pedagogical benefits of a teacher, such as personalized feedback or structured curriculum design. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed illustrations or logical consequences to fully develop your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Nevertheless', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the run-on structure in the second paragraph: '...breakdown some terms in ways it can be easier to learn.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the sentence structure becomes convoluted, making it difficult to follow the logical progression of the argument. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'assimilating', 'formal course', and 'professionals'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice or awkward collocations, such as 'build their study structure better' or 'divide all topics into units it can be well understood'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The current range is sufficient for a 6.0 but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with relative clauses and verb agreement, such as '...the students when left to study independently cannot divide all topics into units it can be well understood by them.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, with a comma splice in the first paragraph ('...guided by a teacher, Therefore, I agree...'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundary control and complex sentence construction will be beneficial.
