Student answer (Band 5.0)

A huge number of students choose to study basis rather than attending a formal course:

People these days are preferring to study english on their own due to increase in technology it is very easy for people to study at home on their own but the assistance of teacher is necessary as it provides us good level of knowledge it also provide us good level of concentration and helps us to enhance our focus and to identify our weaknesses. On the other hand online study provides us several benefits for example facility of recorded lecture and replaying the video etc. recorded lecture helps us complete our lectures later. it also facilitate us by providing handwritten notes of a particular lecture it not only enhances our capacity of learning but also our writing skill, it provides us with the option replaying but there is one drawback it donot provide positive interaction with teacher and donot provide us oppertunity to clear our doubts face to face which is neccessary for students who are weak in a particular subject.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 176 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the student attempts to address the prompt by discussing the benefits of both self-study and formal instruction, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting examples or a clear, sustained position. The response reads more like a brief list of points rather than a structured essay. To improve, the student must expand on each argument with specific examples and ensure the essay is of the required length to allow for a full exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. It is presented as a single block of text rather than being divided into logical paragraphs (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion). There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; sentences are often strung together with simple conjunctions or lack transitions entirely. The progression of ideas is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. To improve, the student should use clear paragraphing and a wider range of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in contrast' to create a logical flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'good level of knowledge' and 'provide us' are used multiple times, indicating a limited range. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'oppertunity' and 'neccessary', and some awkward phrasing like 'study basis'. The student struggles to use more sophisticated or academic vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS Task 2 essay. To improve, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and enhance the precision of their writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('it donot provide') and punctuation. The sentence structures are predominantly simple or repetitive, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is largely absent, with run-on sentences making the text difficult to parse. For example, the lack of full stops and capital letters at the beginning of sentences significantly hinders readability. To improve, the student needs to practice sentence construction, ensuring that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and pay closer attention to basic punctuation rules.
