Student answer (Band 6.0)

An increased number of students prefer to learn English without asking any assistance from a tutor or choosing any formal course. From my perspective, It is better for the students to attend a course or take an assistance from a professional which could help them in building their skills.

Firstly, a professional can provide sources to help students which could save students' precious time and effort. It will take a lot of time to a students to research English material online or from other resources. Apart from that, when he have to understand those material he will struggle a lot, which could waste his time. For example, I used to study to prefer to learn English and I did not ask assistance from my teachers much, which results in my poor grades and wastage of hours preparing.

Secondly, a formal course can help students by taking assessments and providing feedbacks. A student might be able to learn English by self-studying, but there are some mistakes which he makes but he does not know as he have not got any feedback. That's why a formal course not only help a student in its preparation but also takes exams which help students to point out the weak areas where he still need improvements. Besides this, a feedback can also help him out how to improve his English skills. For example, by self-studying a person can learn English but when it comes to his speaking skill, he needs a professional who can listen him and give him some remarks on his speaking skill.

In conclusion, although students can learn English by self-studying but a professional or formal course can help him navigate more effectively by saving time and effort, taking assessments and providing feedbacks

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of formal instruction. The main ideas—saving time through expert guidance and the necessity of external feedback—are relevant and supported with personal examples. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the concept of 'time-saving' and 'feedback'. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended by exploring the psychological benefits of a classroom environment or the social aspects of learning, rather than focusing primarily on the mechanics of study. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion is slightly abrupt and merely summarizes the points without adding a final thought.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from that', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'he' to refer to a gender-neutral 'student', which creates a slightly awkward flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the two main body paragraphs could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'formal course', 'assessments', and 'navigate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward word choices, such as 'take an assistance' (should be 'seek assistance') and 'give him some remarks' (should be 'provide feedback'). The repetition of basic verbs like 'help' and 'learn' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to demonstrate more flexibility. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('a students to research', 'he have to understand', 'he does not know as he have not got'), article usage, and pronoun consistency. For instance, 'a students' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to pluralization and verb tense consistency would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
