Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, a lot of students choose to study English on their own rather than attend a formal course. While in some situations learners may find it hard to manage their studies without a teacher, I largely believe that it depends on personal goals and self-drive.

Although it is true that students often find it difficult to manage their studies, personal goals may determine the extent that a learner takes in their studies. This is because most learners may be aware that some courses require a higher academic performance which makes them study more particularly those who may be planning to pursue them. For this reasons, having a tutor may not be be a factor, since they may do more research with or without them. For instance, if a student wants to be a lawyer, they must study comprehensively. As a result they might achieve better scores even without a teacher.

Furthermore, self-drive is another factor that plays a crucial role in the academic performance of a student. This is because the learner may create more time on their own without the guidance of a teacher, thereby, they may learn on their own without being guided by anyone. Consider students taking their masters degree course, if they are given the course outline, they may do a thorough research independently.

To conclude, although learners may find it hard to manage their studies without a teacher, their results may be determined by their personal goals and self-drive, which forces them to strive to succeed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that self-study success depends on personal goals and self-drive. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that students can research independently, the arguments remain quite general. For instance, the example of a law student is relevant but lacks depth regarding how they actually manage the study process without a teacher. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on the specific challenges of self-study—such as the lack of feedback or structured curriculum—and explain how a motivated student overcomes these specific hurdles, rather than just stating that they do.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'As a result' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'For this reasons' contains a grammatical error and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph ('they may do more research with or without them') is slightly ambiguous, as it is not immediately clear if 'them' refers to the tutors or the courses. Improving the precision of your cohesive links would enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'academic performance', and 'comprehensive'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'create more time', which would be better expressed as 'allocate more time' or 'dedicate more time'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'pursue them' (referring to courses). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to educational methodology and self-regulated learning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences (e.g., 'Although it is true that...'), there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'For this reasons' (plural/singular mismatch), 'may not be be a factor' (repetition), and 'their masters degree course' (missing apostrophe). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation, and try to vary your sentence structure further by using more advanced subordinating conjunctions or relative clauses.
