IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A great number of individuals tend to self-study for english rather then hiring a tutor, that might cause them difficulty down the road. I agree that it is important to have profactional guidence.

I many countries english is not tought from a very young age and many individuals might have grown up watching english shows and movies, beliving that if they can understand it then it might be easy for them, but in reality english is a very wast language that consiste of many jarguns diffrent type of phrases that only a profactional can teach someone or explain it to them. Having a profactional guidence can set you apart from your competion and give you an extra edge. That can tremendesly speedup your learning process and save you a lot of time. Most of the time joining a profaction traning or a boot camp can go a long way because it is designed in such a manner and has a complete protocal of how they will take a beigener to advance level.

But on the other hand some might argue that if you can learn it online through youtube and other sources why spend so much money on a tutor for guidence. That might be right desion for some but most of the time people need an outside pespective and a toutor can also motivate you and move you toward the right direction.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that without the guidence of a teacher it can become very hard for a person manage and learn english.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of professional guidance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that English is a 'vast language' and that tutors provide 'motivation,' these points are not fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. The essay remains somewhat superficial, relying on general statements rather than exploring the nuances of self-study versus formal instruction. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations and perhaps a concrete example of how a teacher specifically helps overcome a common learning hurdle.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into four paragraphs, which is a standard structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'most of the time' is used twice). Transitions between ideas are functional but lack sophistication. For instance, the shift to the counter-argument in the third paragraph is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent spelling errors that distract the reader, such as 'profactional' (professional), 'guidence' (guidance), 'tought' (taught), 'wast' (vast), 'consiste' (consists), 'jarguns' (jargon), 'competion' (competition), and 'tremendesly' (tremendously). These errors are persistent and indicate a lack of control over basic vocabulary. While you attempt to use some topic-specific terms like 'boot camp' and 'outside perspective,' the high frequency of spelling mistakes limits your score. Focusing on proofreading and learning the correct spelling of common academic words is essential.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors in subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and word choice, such as 'in many countries english is not tought' (capitalization and spelling) and 'that might be right desion' (missing article and spelling). Some sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles. While the meaning is generally clear, the high density of grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. You should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring correct verb forms and article usage.
