IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that maximum number of students study English themselves without taking any formal classes. Everything depends upon the person who is studying and how much they have been familiar with the particular subject since childhood.

It is true that every child is different and has different likes and dislikes if we talk about the subjects and languages. Some feel English as a subject is easy while others think it is vast and need professional help. Some may be good at the language because they have been listening to it since they were born while others have no idea because it might not be used in their families. It majorly depends on the environment you're living in too as it has a great influence on you. When you read, listen, write and speak in a particular language you will definitely need no tuitions, although some may need it if they are not clear about the grammar or pronunciations.

Besides that, students who want to give English proficiency certificates to study abroad, need at least a month course to know the tips and tricks to score decent or good marks as these exams have a way of preparation. There are also some students who do self study and bring good bands like 6.5 or 7. Again, there is no such rule to know that.

To conclude, I agree that assistance is really important for those who are not familiar with the language and are not able to manage their studies, but it is also fine if those who are confident about it do self study.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the merits of self-study versus formal instruction. However, the development is somewhat superficial. While you mention that environment and personal aptitude influence success, the arguments lack depth and specific examples. For instance, you mention 'tips and tricks' for proficiency exams but do not elaborate on why a teacher is specifically needed for these beyond just 'knowing the way'. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or logical extensions of your points. Your position is clear, but the overall development of ideas remains somewhat general and lacks the analytical depth required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'Besides that' is a bit informal, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to better connect your arguments and supporting details. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the cohesion is not yet sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'English proficiency certificates' and 'formal classes'. However, the vocabulary is often repetitive and lacks precision. Phrases like 'bring good bands' or 'no such rule to know that' are slightly unnatural or imprecise. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. You have sufficient vocabulary to communicate your message, but you need to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, 'how much they have been familiar with' is awkward; 'how familiar they are' would be more accurate. Additionally, 'give English proficiency certificates' is incorrect usage; you 'take' or 'sit for' an exam. There are also minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures.
