IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many students choose to be self-taught in English rather than to learn under a teacher in a formal class. However, some people feel that it will be hard to navigate studying without a tutor. I completely agree with this school of thought especially for foreign students who do not have English as a first language. This is because they will have challenges understanding the rudiments of the language on their own and this could negatively impact their mastery.

For most literary fields, having a tutor who is experienced in that field is sacrosanct. Language on its own is a very intricate subject area because differences exist even between speaking and reading it. These peculiarities are not easy to spot especially to an untrained eye and that is why a teacher is necessary. The basics of any language are the building blocks of fluency in that language and English just like other languages has its fundamentals which only a person trained to communicate it will be able to break down appropriately. To avoid haphazard learning, wrong use of language, it is usually advisable to learn under a teacher. Studies have shown that people who learn languages from tutors have a higher level of mastery in a short period of time than those who are self-taught

Additionally, doing it by yourself comes with an unnecessary strain. Sometimes, students get frustrated from various episodes of trial and error that just stick to what they have been able to assimilate which impacts on their mastery and leaves them as amateurs. Having a tutor who corrects, and gives tips and tricks on how to surmount these challenges makes learning far less stressful.

In conclusion, to reduce stress and increase proficiency in a language it is best to learn from teachers. This is because they have the requisite knowledge and skills needed to ensure that learning takes place.
