Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent year, an increasing number of student chosen to learn english independently instead of attending formal classes. although self-study offers greated flexiblity, i largely agree that learning without teacher can make it considerably harder for student to organise their stidies and make consistent progress.

one major advantages of self study is that learner ca create a schedule that suits their indivisual circumtances. they can choose their own learning materials, study at their preffered place and focus on areas in which they are weak. for example, a student preparing for IELTS can practise listening and reading whenever they have free time, while using online resources to improve vocabulary and grammar. this approac can be particulary convenient for people who work or have other responsiblites.

nevertheless i beleive that the absence of a teacher can create several difficulties . first student may struggle to identify their weaknesses accurately . A teacher can provide immediate feedback and explain mistake whereas independent learners may repeatedly make the same error without ealising them, second self study requires considerable discipline and motivation. without a fixed timetable or external guidance, student may spend too much much time on essier topic rather than addressing their weakness.

in my experience, combining both approches is generally the most effective solution. while independent practice allowns learners to develop at their own pace, guidance from qualified teacher can provide structure, feedback and accountability. therefor, although self-study can be highly beneficial. i beleive that teacher support remains important for student who want to achieve significant and consistent improvement in english .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, stating that they largely agree that learning without a teacher is difficult. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as mentioning IELTS preparation and the need for discipline. The response meets the task requirements well by discussing both the benefits of self-study and the challenges of lacking teacher assistance. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise in places, and some arguments could be pushed slightly deeper to reach higher band levels. Overall, the task is successfully and clearly answered, fitting comfortably within the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The student uses paragraphing appropriately, dedicating distinct paragraphs to the introduction, the advantages of self-study, the disadvantages, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "nevertheless", "first", and "therefore", although capitalization and punctuation are frequently neglected (e.g. starting sentences with lowercase letters like "nevertheless i beleive"). Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement is coherent. Despite the punctuation issues affecting the surface mechanics of cohesion, the logical flow remains easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "indivisual circumtances", "convenient", and "accountability". However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including "recent year" instead of "recent years", "student" instead of "students", "greated" for "greater", "flexiblity" for "flexibility", "preffered" for "preferred", "approac" for "approach", "particulary", "responsiblites", "beleive", "ealising", "essier", "allowns", and "therefor". While these errors do not impede overall communication because the context remains clear, their high frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching Band 6.0 or higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure with dependent clauses such as "while independent practice allowns learners to develop..." and "although self-study offers greated flexiblity...". However, grammatical accuracy is significantly undermined by a complete lack of capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and for the pronoun "i", along with punctuation omissions. There are also localized grammatical errors, such as "an increasing number of student chosen" instead of "students have chosen", and "learning without teacher" instead of "a teacher". Because the errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization are frequent, they pull the score down to Band 5.5, although complex structures are attempted.
