IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Studying is a task which can be achieved through self-teaching or being taught by a supervisor. Nowadays, a large amount of students prefer studying English independently by self-teaching rather than being enrolled in a formal course. However, without supervision, they often find managing their studies hard. I completely agree to this observation as time can be efficiently utilised if someone's there to guide you.

With the help of a teacher, each topic is covered in detail and within a specific time constraint. The student doesn't have to do his own research as the teacher is well versed with the topics. For example, self-studying English grammar can be difficult but the knowledge and experience of the supervisor can be extremely beneficial covering the topic quickly. As a result, the student's time and focus on other subjects can be effiiciently handled without much stress.

Following this, mistakes are pointed out side by side by a teacher. The student doesn't have to wait for a test to realise his mistakes. Citing an example, learning English vocabulary is a cumbersome task. A teacher corrects your mistakes instantly, so you don't keep following the wrong things. Therefore, a student realises and improves his wrong doings at that very moment.

In conclusion, I highly believe that what success a guidance can bring cannot even be compared to self-studying. Mistakes are brought at eyesight side-by-side, leaving no scope for further improvement as you already are on the right path. In addition, a supervisor can help cover topics at a fast pace, not compromising the depth and explanation, often giving more words of wisdom which is not possible in a self-study.
