Student answer (Band 6.0)

A large number of students decide to learn English independently on a self-study basis rather than attend a English classes. While self study has some disadvantages, I disagree with the view that studying without assistance of teacher is challenging.

One major advantage of self study is the independence and flexiblity a student can acquire while studying independently. Learning English for students is not a primary thing, students learn english as a hobby or desire to learn. To manage timmings and other works students often chose to study by themself rather than attending traditional classses. The student will have flexible hours and place, where and when to learn.

For instance, I myself is an student learning English independently, I find this method of learning way more attractive. The reason for that is I have a busy scheduel and getting time to attend classes is difficult. Self study is an better option for students like me.

On the other hand, Self study has some disadvantages for begginers. The students who just have started learning English might require special attention and teaching from proffesional rather than studying by themself. The assistance of teacher in the intial stage comes very helpfull as it build a foundation for the student. Learning basics is the most important aspect of learning a language, so with the guidance of teacher a student might make less of mistakes compare to self study.

In conclusion, Numerous students choose to study English by themself rather than attending formal courses. However it has some flaws with it but self study in my opinion is better option for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position that disagrees with the idea that studying independently without a teacher is overly challenging. The main ideas are relevant, discussing the advantages of independence and flexibility, as well as acknowledging the counter-perspective regarding beginners. However, some ideas lack full extension and suffer from minor contradictions or underdeveloped points. For example, the introduction states that the student disagrees with the prompt's claim that self-study is challenging, yet the body paragraph concedes that it has disadvantages for beginners. To achieve a higher band score, the development of ideas needs to be more consistent and fully supported with deeper explanations or more detailed personal examples, such as elaborating further on why a busy schedule makes independent learning uniquely suitable.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, thereby meeting the basic structural requirements of an essay. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the advantages of self-study versus the disadvantages for beginners. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences can be abrupt, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with phrases like 'The reason for that is I have a busy scheduel.' Additionally, some sentences lack smooth internal connection. To reach a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing and logical transitions between sentences are handled more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'independence', 'flexiblity', and 'traditional classes'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the response, including 'flexiblity', 'timmings', 'chose' (instead of chosen), 'scheduel', 'begginers', 'proffesional', 'intial', and 'compare' (compared). Word choice and collocations are also occasionally imprecise or awkward, such as 'attend a English classes' or 'make less of mistakes'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes slightly constrain the fluency of the writing, placing the response firmly within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, where vocabulary is adequate to convey meaning despite errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures through clauses introduced by 'while', 'where and when', and 'rather than'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as missing articles ('attend a English classes', 'assistance of teacher', 'with guidance of teacher'), subject-verb agreement issues ('I myself is an student'), and prepositional or structural awkwardness ('make less of mistakes compare to self study'). While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough across the text to prevent the grammar score from reaching a Band 6.5. Improving article usage and sentence boundary accuracy will greatly enhance the control of grammatical structures.
