IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I strongly agree that students can face difficulties when they try to learn english without the guidance of a teacher. Although self-study has some benefits, I believe that formal guidance makes the learning process more organised and effective.

One major problem with self-study is that students may not know what to study or how to improve their weaknesses. English has many areas, such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and speaking. Without a teacher, students may focus only on the areas they enjoy and ignore their weak points. For example, a student may spend a lot of time learning new vocabulary but pay little attention to grammar or pronunciation. As a result, their overall progress can be slow.

Another important advantage of having a teacher is regular feedback and motivation. Teachers can identify mistakes and suggest better ways to improve. They can also create deadlines and encourage students to study regularly. In contrast, students studying alone may easily become distracted or lose motivation. For instance, someone preparing for IELTS may plan to study every day but eventually skip several days because there is no teacher to monitor their progress.

In conclusion, although self-study provides flexibility, I strongly believe that teacher guidance is more effective for most students, particularly when they need structured learning, regular feedback and motivation.
