Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of independent English study compared to attending physical classes, taking a clear position in the conclusion that formal classes are superior. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and the response falls below the required word count of 250 words, stopping at 222 words. This under-length impacts the depth of extension and support for the student's arguments, leading to a Band 5.0 score for Task Achievement. To achieve a higher band, the student must ensure they meet the minimum word count and expand further on their main points with more detailed explanations and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is organised into four paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs covering both sides of the argument, and a conclusion. Transitional phrases such as "To begin with", "On the other hand", and "In conclusion" are used to sequence ideas. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in sentences containing redundant pronouns like "which will I elaborate it". Paragraphing is adequate, but the overall progression is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive cohesive structures, placing the essay comfortably at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, attempting some less common words like "innovation", "linguistic skills", and "shortcuts". However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as "free of cost" instead of "free of charge", "at their own" instead of "on their own", and "social meeting". Additionally, there are spelling errors like "nowdays". Because these vocabulary attempts are marred by frequent minor inaccuracies that sometimes impede precision, the lexical resource fits the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complexity frequently result in grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ("Learning communication skills are not tough", "attending language learning classes are") and redundant pronouns ("which will I elaborate it", "which will they further use"). Punctuation and article usage also need attention. While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of grammatical slips means the performance aligns with Band 5.0.
