Student answer (Band 6.0)

A significant number of students consider learning english independently rather than join a formal class. Althought self-study can be convenient, I agree with the believe that students may find it difficult to study English without the assistance of a teacher.

One of the main reasons why I agree with this view is that a formal course can help students to follow proper study plan and help them to stay motivated in a long run. This is mainly because in formal classes teachers make a proper schedule for every topic, which encourage students to learn new topic everyday. For instance, instrutor, who make a group of students and ask them to make a presentation on any topic the teacher has thaught them, this can help students to study properly on that topic. As a result, students can easily learn every challenging topic in a motivated way.

Another difficuly is that students may not be able to identify and correct their mistake. This is mainly because they do not have a teacher to give them a feedback. For example, students use incorrect grammer in writing and speaking without realizing their mistakes. As a result, this can abruptly affect their grades and eventually their confidence as well. Furthermore, students, who learn English independently do not have any friend to share and communicate their ideas and work.

In conclusion, although self-study is convenient somehow, I agree with the view that students may face difficulty if they learn English independently due to not having a proper study plan and less amount of motivation from a teacher and also they do not have teachers to find and identify their mistakes and help them to correct their errors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the difficulties of self-study and taking a clear position of agreement. The main ideas are relevant, such as the need for a study plan and the difficulty of error correction without a teacher. However, some ideas are under-developed or supported with weak explanations. For instance, the example about teachers making a group presentation in the second paragraph is somewhat confusingly explained and does not fully illustrate how self-study students miss out on structured motivation. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend and fully develop all supporting arguments with clear, cohesive examples without over-generalising.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence, such as discussing study plans in the second paragraph and error correction in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, relying on standard cohesive phrases like 'One of the main reasons' and 'This is mainly because'. Referencing and linking could be smoother to avoid abrupt transitions. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that paragraph transitions feel more natural rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'independently', 'convenient', and 'abruptly'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, form, and spelling errors that reflect a limited range of control. Examples include 'english' (capitalisation), 'join' instead of 'joining', 'believe' instead of 'belief', 'instrutor' (spelling), 'thaught' (spelling), and 'difficuly' (spelling). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they prevent the writer from achieving a higher score. To improve, the writer should focus on accurate word forms, correct spelling, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with 'although', 'because', and 'who'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include missing articles and pluralisation issues such as 'proper study plan', 'feedback' used incorrectly as a countable noun ('a feedback'), and 'grammer' (spelling, though classified under grammar control here for structural agreement). Furthermore, the sentence 'For instance, instrutor, who make a group of students...' lacks a main verb and is structurally incomplete. These errors rarely impede communication, but to progress, the writer must produce more error-free complex sentences and exercise better control over articles and plural forms.
