Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally. While the writer attempts to present a position on whether students should study independently or with a teacher, the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of electronic gadgets and artificial intelligence is introduced without clear explanation or supporting examples. Furthermore, the response is under the word count requirement, failing to reach the minimum of 250 words, which restricts the depth of the argument. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and fully develop each main idea with relevant explanations and clear examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. Although the text is divided into paragraphs, the overall logical progression is weak and disrupted by poor structural organisation. For example, phrases like 'i will explain in the upcoming paragraph' are awkward, and transitions between sentences and paragraphs are abrupt, such as shifting suddenly from independent study to teacher assistance without clear signaling. Referencing is also unclear throughout the essay, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of arguments. To improve, the writer needs to employ clearer paragraphing, logical sequencing of ideas, and more accurate cohesive devices to connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors that strain the reader's understanding. The writer relies on simple terms and makes frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'english', 'gadzets', 'attent', 'techonoly', and 'openion'. Additionally, collocations are unnatural, such as 'join formal course' instead of 'joining a formal course'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate at best. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and accurate word collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting primarily of simple sentence forms and heavily flawed attempts at complex structures. Errors are frequent and often distort meaning, making it difficult for the reader to follow. There are pervasive issues with punctuation, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles, as seen in sentences like 'the large number of pupils choose' and 'children should learn more easily while living their home'. Prepositions inside grammatical patterns are frequently misused or omitted. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures and significantly improve grammatical accuracy by reducing basic sentence errors.
