Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 66 words. Because the writing is severely truncated, the task is addressed only minimally and remains extremely under-developed. Although the introduction touches upon the prompt by acknowledging the debate between independent English study and formal courses, it stops abruptly after three sentences without presenting any body paragraphs, supporting arguments, or a clear overall position on the extent of agreement. To reach higher bands, the writer must fully develop a well-structured essay with dedicated body paragraphs that explore multiple perspectives and provide relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some basic organisational structure by attempting an introductory paragraph with transitional phrases such as 'Event though' and 'Although'. However, due to the extreme brevity of the response, there is no overall logical progression or body paragraphing to evaluate fully. Cohesive devices are minimal and slightly mechanical, and referencing is limited. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to organise information into distinct paragraphs, use a wider range of cohesive devices naturally to connect ideas, and ensure a clear, logical flow throughout a complete essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'advanced era', 'educational academies', and 'intervention'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-form errors, such as 'themself' instead of 'themselves', and awkward phrasing like 'Event though' instead of 'Even though'. These errors do not completely impede basic communication, but they reflect a limited and somewhat inaccurate lexical range. To improve, the student should focus on accurate word forms, natural collocations, and expanding their repertoire of precise academic vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing shows an attempt at complex sentence structures, seen in multi-clause sentences like 'Although there are varied views existing but this essay will illustrate...'. However, this sentence exhibits a grammatical error by combining 'Although' and 'but'. There are also minor subject-verb agreement and structural issues, such as 'students learn independently but sometimes they find'. The range of grammatical structures remains limited due to the short length of the text, containing a mix of basic patterns with faulty complex attempts. To progress, the student must eliminate redundant conjunctions and practice error-free complex sentence construction.
