Student answer (Band 6.0)

For individuals and society, few things are more crucial than the study of English. In many parts of the world, considerable attention is given to English, as it plays a prominent role in providing better opportunities for people's lives. Many pupils study English independently through self-study rather than formal courses. But students might face difficulties without teachers' support. Nevertheless, I firmly agree with the latter statement because no one can enhance their knowledge of English without a comprehensive guide. Therefore, a teacher can be a better solution for improving skills.

To commence with, many students choose to study alone without any formal course. When they begin for the first time, they can not find their study roadmap or how to start. Moreover, sometimes they often feel frustrated about it and demotivated; basic-level students, for instance, face some difficulties when they start studying English alone, such that they do not know grammar, sentence structures, and how to use vocabulary with a contest. Those issues are more effective for them. As a result, self-study is not a proper solution for enhancing fluency in the English language.

On the other hand, studying with an instructor can be a better solution for students. There are several benefits, such as the teacher being considered significantly beneficial for learners. Furthermore, a tutor helps in numerous ways; when a basic-level student comes to him, firstly, he guides them through a comprehensive plan so that they will be able to understand and start the course confidently. To illustrate, as a Bangladeshi teacher, I give some tips and tricks so that students can realise the main theme and stay connected with a proper routine. However, a full preparation plan can be a better solution to take the first step. In addition, a range of grammar and sentence structures carries a substantial benefit for learners. Thus, without the assistance of a teacher, students are not able to manage their studies.

To sum up, although self-study can save them money for foundation English study, a teacher plays a pivotal role in providing a fantastic routine so that students can develop their English skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that learners often struggle to manage English study without a teacher, and the essay addresses both independent study and teacher support. The examples about beginners lacking a roadmap and a tutor providing a plan are relevant. This meets the task well overall, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, “no one can enhance their knowledge of English without a comprehensive guide” is an overly absolute claim, and the paragraph on teachers repeats their benefits without showing in detail how guidance improves learning outcomes. The personal example about teaching in Bangladesh adds relevance, but could be developed with a specific result. More balanced, precise support would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from difficulties with self-study to the advantages of instruction is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To commence with,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” help identify the stages. However, some linking is mechanical or does not express the relationship between ideas precisely. “Those issues are more effective for them” is unclear, while “There are several benefits” is followed by a general statement that largely repeats the previous point. References such as “the latter statement” also make the position less direct. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and ensure each paragraph develops a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonably varied set of topic-related vocabulary, including “prominent role,” “demotivated,” “comprehensive plan,” and “pivotal role.” These choices show an effort to use language beyond basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “use vocabulary with a contest” does not convey a clear idea, and “Those issues are more effective for them” uses “effective” inappropriately. Phrases such as “fantastic routine” and “full preparation plan” are also imprecise for an academic argument. Aim for natural collocations and choose words that express the intended relationship exactly; this will make your ideas clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “so that.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are noticeable and sometimes make a sentence hard to follow. For example, “When they begin for the first time, they can not find their study roadmap or how to start” has an awkward parallel structure, and “when a basic-level student comes to him, firstly, he guides them” shifts between singular and plural reference. The sentence beginning “There are several benefits, such as the teacher being considered…” is also structurally unclear. Practise building complete, well-controlled sentences and check pronoun agreement, parallel phrasing, and punctuation in longer sentences.
