A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Majority of pupils want to learn english on their own basis whereas, it is believed that it is difficult without any formal course or teacher. I partly agree with this statement.

To start with, there are many ways to learn english as own. Nowadays, students use internet and they can learn anything from internet without any formal classes. There are many reasons why pupils want to learn on their own basis. Firstly, the tution fee of formal courses are very high whereas, they can learn it from internet and in free of cost. also they can attend lectures at anytime and anywhere. Secondly, they can save the video from internet and can listen whenever they want. also they dont feel hestate if they say something wrong.

However, if students learn it from formal cousre that can also develop communication skills as well as confidence to speak in public. Students can learn more in full of classroom rather than learn alone. Teacher will motivate the student in classrooom. They can also clear their doubts in class and can learn more.

To conclude, online learning and formal learning both have their own benefits, if a student want to learn alone then it is good to learn from internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear, relevant position—“I partly agree”—and discuss both independent study and formal classes, so the response addresses the central issue. The points about cost, flexible access to online lessons, reduced embarrassment, classroom communication, and teacher support are appropriate. However, the position is not fully explained: the conclusion favours learning online without clarifying when or why teacher assistance becomes important. Several ideas are also brief, such as the claim that classroom learning builds confidence, which would benefit from an example or explanation. The response is 44 words below the required minimum, leaving limited space to develop your reasons. Extend the discussion with specific examples and explain more precisely how far you agree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting independent study, a contrasting paragraph about formal courses, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “However” help readers follow the main contrast. At times, though, the progression feels list-like, with several short points added without explaining how they connect. Repeated use of “also” and “they” makes the links mechanical or occasionally unclear, while the conclusion does not fully resolve the contrast developed in the body. Build each paragraph around one main idea, then explain or illustrate it before moving on. More precise referencing and a conclusion that restates your qualified position would make the organisation more coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “formal courses,” “tuition fee,” “communication skills,” and “confidence.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes the writing less clear and fluent. Examples include “learn English as own,” “in free of cost,” and “learn more in full of classroom.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “tution,” “hestate,” and “cousre” are also noticeable. Aim to learn common collocations for education and online study, and check spelling carefully. Using a wider range of accurate phrases would help you express comparisons and benefits more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “whereas” and a conditional idea in the conclusion. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “the tution fee … are very high” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “if a student want” needs a verb form that agrees with its subject. The opening sentence also contains awkward clause structure and punctuation. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general message, but they make some sentences difficult to process. Practise accurate sentence patterns and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
