IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Without the assistance of a teacher, it is difficult to manage and learn the English course. I agree with this statement.

The presence of a teacher in a language course like English is really important and can considerbly improve the performance of a student. Especially if the student is new to the language. As English is a language course, it includes 4 main parts; reading, writing, listening and speaking. The teacher can guide and grade the student's performance in all these 4 areas. this can really help in the speaking area, as it is one of the major skill showcasing the knowledge of a language. The grammar and accent needs to be assessed by another export or a tutor.

On the other hand, if one is not able to afford a formal course or he/she had already taken the course and is only trying to refine the skills, then, one can study the course using the online resources. In today's era of AI and online courses, all parts of the language can be learnt and improved independently. This has also become a trend now and is known to be more effective. It allows the student to be flexible in his/her timetable timings and budget.

Overall, the fact that a real person's guidance can not be replaced by an online AI assistant or grading system, is prominent and can not be ignored. An imprompt conversation, misunderstanding or over-confidence can affect one's skills in learning a language, which can only be improved by taking the proper assistance of a tutor/teacher. But, yes one can improve its skills independently after he/she has taken and learnt the course, for the future usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that teacher support is important, while recognising that independent study can help learners who already have a foundation or cannot afford a course. The discussion of feedback across reading, writing, listening and speaking is relevant, and the contrast with online resources addresses both sides of the issue. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the claim that online learning is “known to be more effective” is not explained or supported, and the final point about misunderstandings and over-confidence remains general. To develop the response further, explain why a teacher’s feedback is especially valuable and give a specific example of how independent learners may struggle to identify errors. Your position is present throughout, though its qualification could be stated more precisely in the introduction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces your agreement, explains the teacher’s role, considers circumstances in which independent study may work, and ends with a qualified conclusion. Paragraphing supports this overall organisation, and transitions such as “On the other hand” and “Overall” help signal shifts in the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Especially if the student is new to the language” is a fragment, while “But, yes” makes the conclusion sound conversational and does not clearly connect the qualification to your main position. The final paragraph also combines several ideas—AI, misunderstandings, confidence and future study—without fully showing how they relate. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example directly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “performance,” “assessed,” “refine the skills,” “online resources” and “flexible.” These choices allow you to discuss teaching and independent learning clearly, and you attempt some more specific language. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “language course” where you mean language skills, “skill showcasing,” and “future usage.” There are also spelling errors, including “considerbly” and “export” for “expert,” which reduce precision. Some expressions, such as “timetable timings,” are repetitive. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe a teacher as giving “feedback on a learner’s progress” and say that skills can be “developed for future use.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures (“if one is not able to afford a formal course”) and subordinate clauses explaining the teacher’s role. Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. “The grammar and accent needs” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “this can really help” begins a sentence without a capital letter. The opening phrase “Especially if the student is new to the language” is a fragment, while “one can improve its skills” uses an unsuitable pronoun reference. The final sentence also shifts awkwardly between “one” and “he/she.” Improve control by checking agreement, sentence boundaries and consistent pronoun use, while retaining the complex sentence forms you already attempt.
