Student answer (Band 6.0)
With the advancement in the field of network and communication, teaching English and studying it online has become much easier than ever in the past. It has affected a large number of students in prefering self-study rather than choosing traditional methods of learning such as attending a payed course. Although many students find it hard to manage their studies without a teacher, I agree to a large extent that self-studying is more efficeint as it is cost free, more flexable and much easier.
It is true that many students often lack the ability of managing their studies without the guidance of a trained professional which makes self-studying a much harder task. They are often the students who might not be good ia using internet or computers and they dont have access to productive websites, apps and other tools for learning. These circumstances can prove as hurdles in learning English leading to bad results.
However, I believe that the advantages of self-studying out weights its disadvantages as all kinds of of lessons are available on diffrent platforms such as youtube, instagram, facebook and other websites to learn English without the help of a proper tutor. Many teenagers specifically claim that their profeciency in English language is only because of social media, Hollywood and online gaming proving that the need of a teacher is scarce when these platforms ae available for everyone.
Furthemore, learning English online is free of cost which particularly attracts people who are budgeting money for other expenses as it not only saves them from paying for the course but also avoid transport expense to reach the house of tutor.
In conclusion, I would say that though many students face problems in organising their study plans, it is still very do-able. It is a skill that shoukd be learned because self- study saves not only money but also provides a much student-friendly schedual of learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree to a large extent that independent study is effective, while acknowledging that some learners struggle without guidance. You address both sides and give relevant reasons, including access to online resources, cost savings and transport. The examples of social media and online gaming help illustrate how learners encounter English outside formal lessons. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the point about students lacking digital skills is introduced briefly, and the claim that social media makes a teacher unnecessary is broad rather than carefully explained. To strengthen the response, develop these ideas with a specific example and explain more directly how independent study helps students manage their learning, not only why it is convenient or inexpensive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph acknowledging difficulties, two paragraphs supporting self-study, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “However,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” make the direction of the argument easy to follow. The progression is generally logical, and each paragraph has a recognisable focus. Some connections are less smooth, however: the discussion moves from online platforms to teenagers’ proficiency and then to cost without fully linking these points to the question of managing studies. The conclusion also repeats the benefits rather than drawing together the argument. For stronger cohesion, use clearer links between each reason and your position, and vary transitions so the essay does not rely mainly on explicit signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “guidance,” “trained professional,” “productive websites,” “platforms” and “transport expense.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrases show an attempt to be precise. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, for example “prefering,” “payed,” “efficeint,” “flexable,” “diffrent” and “profeciency.” There are also awkward or imprecise combinations such as “out weights its disadvantages,” “the need of a teacher is scarce” and “budgeting money.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they reduce accuracy and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, especially when expressing advantages, costs and the role of teachers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although many students find it hard…” and a relative clause in “which makes self-studying a much harder task.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical problems persist, particularly in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “it not only saves them from paying … but also avoid transport expense” does not maintain parallel structure, while “students often lack the ability of managing” uses an unsuitable grammatical pattern. The sentence beginning “They are often the students who…” is also awkwardly constructed. To improve, practise parallel forms after “not only…but also,” and check verb patterns after nouns such as “ability” and “difficulty.”
