IELTS Writing Task 2 question

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many students today choose to learn English by themselves at home instead of going to a regular school. While self-study gives students more freedom, I completely agree that learning without a teacher is very hard because it is difficult to stay organized and find mistakes.

To begin with, the biggest problem of self-study is staying motivated. Students may learn at home, make their own timetable, and force yourself to study everyday. As a result, students may get lazy and bore by their routine. In contrast, school gives a strict routine to students, so that they can do everything. Moreover, a teacher also concentrate in students so that they can perform well and give their best in learning.

Furthermore, everybody needs someone who can correst their mistakes and can make to improve them. For instance, if you will learn and give test of seaking English both to yourself, you will not be able to pick out your mistakes. You will not be able to correct your mistakes due to which you will make mistakes over and over again. A teacher is neccessary for picking out mistakes immediately and correct them. Without this help, students cannot imporove themselves or get success in their lives.

Of course, everyone can study at home as it have some benefits. For example, they do not have to pay to someone and can study at any time and go at your own speed. But still some people who are not self- deciplined enough in their own need guidance to do everything fluently and to achieve their goals.

In conclusion, everyone have their own choices and preferences but with a guider or a teacher students acn do everythin in a better way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that studying without a teacher is difficult, and the conclusion returns to the value of guidance. You address the main issue with relevant reasons, especially motivation and the difficulty of identifying errors, and the example of practising speaking alone helps illustrate the second point. You also acknowledge benefits such as flexibility and lower cost, which gives the response some balance. However, the motivation point is not fully explained, and claims such as students needing a teacher to “do everything” or achieve success in life are broad rather than carefully supported. Develop each reason with a more specific explanation or example to make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining difficulties, a paragraph recognising advantages, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “Of course” make the stages of the argument easy to follow. The progression from motivation to correction of mistakes is logical, and the final paragraph restates your view. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “In contrast, school gives a strict routine… so that they can do everything” does not clearly explain the contrast, and repeated references to “mistakes” make the second body paragraph feel repetitive. Use clearer links between cause and consequence, and vary referencing so that each paragraph develops its point more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “self-study,” “timetable,” “routine,” “guidance,” and “preferences.” Some phrases also show an attempt to express the argument specifically, such as “pick out my mistakes.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors make parts awkward or unclear: “get lazy and bore,” “concentrate in students,” and “make to improve them.” Spelling errors such as “correst,” “neccessary,” and “imporove” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural phrases for learning and teaching, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain your ideas without relying repeatedly on “mistakes” and “do.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concession beginning “While self-study gives students more freedom” and a conditional example beginning “if you will learn.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but control is uneven: several sentences contain errors in agreement, verb forms, pronouns, or sentence construction. For example, “Students… force yourself” shifts from plural to singular, “a teacher also concentrate” has incorrect agreement, and “everyone have” should use a singular verb. The conditional “if you will learn” is also not formed correctly for this meaning. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and use straightforward conditional patterns. Greater accuracy in these structures would make your argument easier to read.
