A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The current technological advancements allow students to independently study English although few students manage to cope up and learn the language, I strongly believe that a language is best taught by a professional teacher who is well-versed with the language as learning a completely new language from stratch is very difficult.

The main reason being that there is no one to judge the student whether he is on the correct path that would actually enable the student to be fluent in that language. This happens because when we are self studying there is no way to test ourselves and correct our pronounciation, grammer, fluency, etc.For instance, I had a friend who had just moved from a Hindi medium school to a English medium school for his board exams.Initially, for weeks he tried to learn how to read the textbooks that were provided to him that were in english but he couldnt understand a word, later when the English professor sat with him for two months and took personal classes after school hours and told him where his training was lacking enabled my friend to read and confidently write the answers in English. This shows that involvement of a trained professional who gives feedback can significantly improve a student's progress.

Another reason can be that when someone is trying to do learn on his own without a proper system of exams, tests and timetable they often lack the seriousness required. This is because a well crafted course includes different grounds where the student has to prove their progress and if they are not performing well it can be taken up by the teacher to improve those particular areas. For example, When I was trying to learn Physics I decided to learn it on my own, I would ignore all the tests and questions that were given at the end of each chapter to solve and just think that I know the theory so when it comes in my final exam I will do these questions there itself. This way I had no way to check my progress before the final exams and ultimately scoring low grades due to my negligence. If I would have chosen a course for this I would have been able to test how much I know and how much I need to work on and my teacher would have helped me improve. This can directly be correlated to someone who is trying to learn English on their own.

In conclusion,I think even with the new trend of self studying, I feel it is very important that a teacher is involved in order to guide and keep a check on the student's work while he is studying for English.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly support teacher involvement, and the conclusion maintains that view. You address the difficulty of independent study through two relevant reasons—lack of corrective feedback and weak study discipline—and extend both with personal examples. The account of your friend’s progress after receiving lessons is particularly effective, while the Physics example helps explain how testing can reveal gaps. This meets the task well, with ideas generally extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, keep the discussion more directly focused on learning English: the Physics example is relevant by analogy, but its connection could be made more concise and explicit. You could also acknowledge briefly that independent study can be useful when supported by suitable resources or routines.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from feedback to study discipline is logical, and examples are placed where they support the relevant point. You also use linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion.” However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly the long sequence in the first example, where the professor’s actions and their result are crowded into one sentence. The Physics paragraph also repeats the idea of checking progress several times. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing, and trim repeated explanation, to make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain your position, including phrases such as “well-versed,” “feedback,” “progress,” and “seriousness required.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the examples make your meaning clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations, such as “cope up,” “different grounds,” and “do learn on his own.” Spelling errors including “stratch,” “pronounciation,” and “grammer” also reduce accuracy. Some wording is repetitive, especially “student” and “learn,” and “English professor” may not be the most natural term for the teacher described. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “although,” “because,” and “when,” and you use examples to develop longer sentences. The overall meaning remains understandable. However, some sentences are difficult to follow because several clauses are joined without clear punctuation, as in the sentence beginning “For instance, I had a friend…” and continuing through the professor’s help. There are also errors in sentence structure and verb forms, such as “when someone is trying to do learn” and “If I would have chosen a course.” Articles and agreement need attention too, for example “a English medium school” and “they often lack” after “someone.” Break long sentences into manageable units and check clause structure, articles, and conditional forms.
