Student answer (Band 6.0)

A large number of students determined to learn english independently on their own rather than enroll in formal course. However, without the guidance of teacher, they often struggle to organise and manage their studies. I agree with this opinion that individuals may find it difficult to study independently.

I believe, teachers can help students learn English in various ways. This is because, they can teach learners how to speak English with the correct pronunciation and accent, as well as guide them in improving their speaking skills. Moreover, teachers can explain the differences between words and their synonyms, helping students expand their vocabulary. As a result, learners can communicate in english more confidently and fluently. For instance, students who have to pass their exam in ielts and want to go to abroad for higher studies and they do not enrol in course but instead they do practice on their own, and ended up with low bands.

Furthermore, teachers understand that every student has a different learning style and individual needs. They can identify which teaching methods work best for each learner and adapt their approach accordingly. As a result, students can understand lessons more easily and achieve better academic results. As a result, students can achieve better academic results and reach their desired goals. For example, a teacher may realise that a student learns better through practical activities rather than reading books. By adapting their teaching methods, the teacher can help the student understand english more easily, improve their performance in exams, and achieve their desired goals.

In conclusion, I agree that teachers can help students improve their English pronunciation and identify their individual learning styles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you agree that learners can struggle without a teacher. You give relevant reasons, including support with pronunciation and vocabulary, and adapting instruction to different learning styles. These points address the question and are supported with examples, such as the IELTS candidate who practises alone and the student who benefits from practical activities. The response also shows some development beyond simply stating an opinion. However, the IELTS example is difficult to follow and does not explain clearly why independent study led to a low score; the point about vocabulary is also only briefly developed. To strengthen the response further, explain the causes and consequences of each example more precisely and consider the extent of your agreement in a little more depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from teachers’ language support to their ability to tailor instruction, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical. “As a result” is repeated several times, including twice in the paragraph about learning styles, and the repeated claim about achieving better academic results makes the progression less efficient. Some links within sentences are also awkward, particularly the long IELTS example, which makes the relationship between independent practice and low scores unclear. Use a wider range of linking methods, remove repeated claims, and divide or reshape the example so each sentence has a clear purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “pronunciation,” “synonyms,” “individual needs,” “adapt their approach,” and “practical activities.” These choices help explain how teachers may support learners, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “determined to learn” where the intended meaning appears to be simply choosing to learn, and “go to abroad.” “Do practice” and “low bands” are also less natural in this context. Capitalisation is inconsistent for “English” and “IELTS.” Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check common collocations and proper-noun spelling; this would make the vocabulary more controlled without changing the relevant ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “rather than,” and “by adapting,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “rather than enroll in formal course” needs an article, while “without the guidance of teacher” also lacks one. The IELTS example shifts awkwardly from “students who have to pass” to “they do practice” and “ended up,” making the sentence difficult to control. There is also an incomplete construction in “For instance, students who…” before the sentence continues. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them carefully, checking articles and consistent verb forms.
