IELTS Writing Task 2 question
A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self- study basis rather than attend a formal course. However, without the assistance of a teacher, students often find it difficult to manage their studies.
To what extent do you agree or disagree ?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Students tend to study English by themselves on a self study format rather than taking help from tutors or attending a class. Although, there are many problems faced by students without a proper guidance. I agree with the perspective that self learning helps developing cognitive skills to students, but sometimes it may result to demotivation and make students anxious.
Self-study usually builds a sense of research towards learning new ideas and concepts. Nowadays, most of the students are switching from taking course to learning online from videos or asking artificial intelligence their query about their particular field of interest. Sometimes, students even neglect physical classes because they are confident to learn themselves. For instance, I find comfortable on watching online videos and gathering information about particular topics rather then paying to attend for classes.
However, without a proper guidance or a tutor every self-study goes in vain. Students struggle to find answers or solution to their problems, which may create them mental burden and develop sense of demotivation. Students often find it difficult to focus on solution and rather start to panic. Teachers are guiders for students who helps them finding solutions, fulfilling their wants and making a learning a fun activity or a hobby. I agree that without a guide we're just walking inside a cave without a torch. It is sometimes really difficult to search for answers to hard questions.
In conclusion, even though self study gives freedom to chose on how one learn, it leaves a person unanswered with their doubts. Moreover, self study is really time consuming and hectic to start without any guidance and support. Teachers are often considered as guiding light to help students cope with their problem lf learning grammar concepts and structures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is identifiable: you recognise that independent study can build research skills, but agree that learners may struggle without a teacher. Both sides are relevant, and the examples of online videos and difficulty solving questions help address the topic. However, the extent of your agreement is not fully consistent: the opening says self-learning helps, while the conclusion stresses its disadvantages without clearly weighing these against its benefits. Some points, such as how teachers make learning enjoyable or how self-study causes anxiety, are asserted rather than explained with a specific example. Develop the comparison more fully and state a clear, consistent judgement about whether teacher support is essential or simply beneficial.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. The contrast signalled by “However” helps readers follow the shift to the difficulties of studying alone, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and linking. At times, though, connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although” begins a sentence without a main clause, and “Moreover” introduces a further disadvantage without clearly linking it to the preceding conclusion. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s central point explicit and using pronouns and transitions only where their references are clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant expressions such as “cognitive skills,” “demotivation,” “mental burden,” and “guiding light.” These attempts to express abstract ideas and use figurative language show some range, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “a sense of research towards learning,” “find answers or solution,” and “fulfilling their wants.” “Self study” and “self-study” are also used inconsistently. Aim for more natural academic combinations, such as “develop research skills,” “find answers to their questions,” and “meet their learning needs.” More precise phrasing would make your ideas clearer and reduce the impression of awkward wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening and longer sentences explaining consequences. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make the relationships between clauses less clear. For example, “Although, there are many problems” is an incomplete construction, while “self learning helps developing” needs a different verb pattern. There are also agreement and article errors in “Teachers are guiders … who helps them,” and “how one learn.” Work on complete clause structures, subject–verb agreement, and verb patterns such as “help someone develop.” Check sentence boundaries and punctuation as well, particularly where a dependent clause begins a sentence.
