Student answer (Band 5.0)

A huge number of students choose to study English independently on a self study basis rather than attend a formal course and they find it very difficult and I agree with this statement.

Basically, If I talk about Pakistan, English is not our first language and students find it difficult to learn but still they try to study on their own. There are two reasons behind this which I have observed are fees and people's opinion. In my opinion people thought the courses has a big amout of fee and they try to do by their self for instance, youtube, websites and free online tutors etc. The other reason is they felt ashamed to take English class because there is a lot of society pressure for those who already studied in English medium schools.

On the other hand, few pupils who are studied in well reputed schools they are already aware of alot of things like the grammer, so they don't find many difficulties in learning English. However some of them are not fluent and the only reason behind this they don't speak in daily life. For example Ielts people who want to study abroad needs to pass this test and there is a proper structure and modules that learners have to know before giving the test.In this English matters but the training matters the most.

Overall, I agree to have a human teacher and formal course to learn something new not only English, is important. Otherwise, student will only get confused and will have alot of information if they gather online and from other platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view in the opening and conclusion: you agree that independent learners can struggle and that a teacher or formal course is important. The reasons about course fees and social pressure are relevant, and the Pakistan context gives the response a personal basis. However, the discussion only partly answers the question: the reasons are stated more than explained, and the point about IELTS preparation is not clearly connected to managing independent study. The position also shifts slightly when you say some students have few difficulties, without explaining how this qualifies your agreement. The response is 243 words, so it is 7 words below the 250-word minimum; the 21 words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop one example and explain more directly how teacher support helps learners manage their studies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph about reasons for self-study, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Connectors such as “On the other hand,” “For example,” and “Overall” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the IELTS example appears abruptly, and “In this English matters but the training matters the most” does not clearly link to the preceding point. Some sentences combine several ideas, making the relationships difficult to follow, while “Basically” and “In my opinion” do not always add useful organisation. To improve, give each body paragraph one main point, explain it, and then provide a directly relevant example. Use clearer referencing and transitions between the ideas about school background, speaking practice, and formal instruction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including topic-related terms such as “formal course,” “society pressure,” “fluent,” and “modules.” The examples of “youtube, websites and free online tutors” also make the discussion concrete. However, the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “do by their self,” “a big amout of fee,” and “a lot of information” where you mean information gathered from different sources. Spelling errors, including “grammer” and “alot,” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe learners as studying “on their own,” refer to “high course fees,” and use “a large amount of information” when discussing online resources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the response is generally understandable. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation sometimes make the reader work to understand the meaning. Examples include “the courses has,” “few pupils who are studied,” and “students … needs to pass”; these require subject–verb agreement and more accurate verb forms. The sentence beginning “There are two reasons behind this which I have observed are…” is also difficult to control. Capitalisation and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent, as in “If” after a comma and “English.However.” Practise building shorter, accurate sentences first, then combine ideas using subordinate clauses. Check each sentence for a clear subject, correctly formed verb, and appropriate punctuation.
